Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - SF to SJ weekly ride

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I just wanted to put the invite out there for anyone interested in joining us on this.
Basically, every Thursday we've been riding from SF to Palo Alto via a pretty flat route(we did it this morning too). Starting this thursday I will be going all the way to San Jose with others stopping along the way at their respective workplaces. If anyone is intersted in riding along, we meet up at 5am at 16th and 3rd. I usually ride brakeless, so don't be scurred.

i can't do it thursdays, i have to teach. wednesdays and i'd be interested
Tuesdays are also in, I rode down today as well. I may not do it on Tuesday next week because I'm playing from 10 to midnight so I don't really want to start my Tuesday at 5am, but I will be doing it the Tuesday after next.
It's a really nice ride, hardly any traffic, fog rolling over the hills, lots of long, flat stretches to ride flat-out.
Dokushoka and Nero have both done it, as have a few others who aren't on the forum...

Taking a bunch of smaller roads that parallel the CalTrain track, we only ride on El Camino for less than a mile, and since there are a few of us we take a lane. I get to work around 8:30 (N 1st and Brokaw) if I leave at 5am, so 9:30 would be easy. We meet at 5am and keep a pretty decent pace, today we were racing, but Thursday will probably be a bit more relaxed since there are a few first timers joining in.

We pass through there ~ 6-6:30, usually hit Redwood City at 7-7:15, but it's Tuesdays and Thursdays that we do the ride in. Where do you work?

Off bayshore highway between Millbrae Ave and Broadway. Friday is bike-day for me because I carpool the rest of the week for free, plus friday is "casual dress" at the office... The weather is too nice to sit inside a Bart train with the bike.
Bring a bag with your clothes and do it with us on a Thursday, that's what I do. We go through there really early though.

that's a bit early for me, i'd be putting in 12 hours at the cubicle. ouch! i'll bang it out this friday and see how long it takes me.
how about saturday rides to hellyer? my mom's backyard is a good refueling spot, beer and big swimming pool.
I'll join in again the next time I have an 8-5 day. No luck with the new job though, so I'm still tied to the phone from 7-5. So I get to wake up just as early, but don't get the benefit of the bike ride

Right on man! 5am at 16th and 3rd is the time and place. Or you can meet me at my house or meet us somewhere along the way at the millbrae BART station or something, it's up to you. Give me a call and let me know.

You could pretty easily hop off there from the route that we take. It goes down Old County which bisects Ralston.
Kendal came with us today and rode til Palo Alto station. I rode all the way in to work. Right after Kendal split off Corey and I got pulled over for running a red. The cop couldn't believe that we'd "rode all the way from the city on track bikes without brakes". He was nice enough, said he used to race down at hellyer, and checked out our bikes for a while, still gave us tickets though
How much did he charge you? You might be able to fight it.

being third bike through the red there were some down right evil looks on faces, kind of why i stopped more than i ran through those freakin' unholy long lights, heck i saw people using laptops while waiting for green...not to forget about running that train gate, cutting in front of that oncoming train... i think that was the point where i was beginning to wake up fully.
loved the ride, i can't believe there is that little traffic, i mean basically we hit traffic in what like menlo park or something, and then it wasn't nothing.
ok so now i see why you have your pad, that bike car was brutal, some of those pos riding types simply toss their bikes into the pile not giving a sh^t...

I feel kinda dumb, he didn't ask for ID or anything. Why did I give him my real name and address? Oh well, maybe this will cover me for a few years...

As for CM this Friday, I might go. Depends on when Don is gonna be in town, I may end up getting dinner with him or something, if not though, I'll be there on the blue bike (I broke a few chainring bolts on the Kiyo so it's taking it easy until I can get some replacements).

Nice! I'm working in Mountain View right now, moving to the city on sep. 1, so I'll be commuting south. I'm planning on hitting the caltrain, or (don't hate) driving some days when I've gotta wear a suit. I'd definitely be interested in riding down some days though. I'll PM some of you guys once I get moved in.
Dude, chewbacca is always riding my bike. Honestly though, I don't know, the heads just broke off of two of the bolts and fell out of the holes. I was wondering why my drivetrain got noisy all of a sudden and when I got home that was the situation...

Man, that is so weird. I wonder if they were bunk bolts or something? There shouldn't be enough stress on them that the heads would be snapping off.
That route looks mostly like city streets with alot of traffic signals, how many signals do you cross?
Lots, we run most of them because at 5-7am there are almost no cars on the road. It's not until Palo Alto that you have to worry about traffic. Hell, we ran a train crossing today, that was a little iffy, I think it scared Kendal awake :D

Anybody ever ride from SF directly to Hellyer? I know it's in the SJ area, but I've never been. How close does your route run to Hellyer?
Hellyer is another 10 miles or so by the map.

hellyer is pretty south sj, i've never done the ride myself but i'd assume it would add somewhere near 30-45 minutes to the total time from sf to sj that the guys above do. it takes me maybe an hour from where my parents are in the south bay. and the ride from sf to their house is about 2 - 2.5 hrs i think? i might be slow though.

Realistically, you're not going to be competitive at the track after such a long ride. I'd be damn tired...

Right on, 5am start time, 16th and 3rd, tuesdays and thursdays.
