The beautiful Merckx (owned by ianrox on the forums) that ink1373 posted in the fixie/photos thread alerted me to the Nitto Anatomic bars (as pictured, top here: http://www.businesscycles.com/tbars-nitto.htm).

I've been riding with steel Deda Pista drops that came off a 05 pista, these: http://store.bianchiusa.com/cgi-bin/store/E5010.html.

Those bars are sufficient but I find that riding in the drops, isn't as comfortable on my hands as I'd like them to be. I'm not sure if the length of the flat ends of the drops are too short but I find myself wanting a bit more. Aside from that, I find that at the track I want my hands to be a little more forward closer to the curves but the missing lump (which is where I'm guessing the anatomic part would play a role here) bothers me.

Thus, would anatomic bars solve this (and are the Nittos good?) or would a longer flat area in the drops at the ends help?

Sounds like the anatomics would work for you. Maybe try a longer and/or differently angled stem and play with the rotation of the bars as well.

It seems they would too - I wish Marcus had a pair at Yojimbo's to try out...

I did play with the rotation of the bars yesterday - angled them down more so the ends came up. Rode that for a bit and that was a definite no-no. So I went in the opposite direction and rotated the bars forwards, towards me a little and that felt better. On the flats, my hands felt more neutral.

The anatomic part is what I'm curious about now -- when I'm on the track I want to dig my hands in deeper or more forward on the bars at the curve but my hands have a "missing" feel. Thus, anatomic...

naz, have you tried tipping your drops down a bit towards your rear axle? such an angle could sort of simulate that of those b127's...

edit: oops. i guess i left this window open too long as i browsed the businesscycles site a bit too much... as usual. sorry for the late and redundant post.

I was thinking that as well - I'm moving them in that direction a little but nowhere near to simulating the b127's. I may try that.

Don't you hate that? I'm always clicking a link there and then find myself browsing around to see if anything's new...

hey absntr, i used the nitto 127s for a while and although they were comfortable, i couldn't really tell THAT much of a difference while in the drops. the main thing for me was that they anatomic part of the drops puts your wrists in a straighter position, taking some of the stress off. but to be honest, i can't really tell much difference between those, the 123s or the deda pistas i have now. the most comfortable bar i've used, and still use, is the modolo drops on the surly. they feel really good in the drops, but are somewhat flexy when sprinting, thats why i have the deda pistas on the spicer.

I haven't ridden anatomic track drops, but I have anatomic Ritchey drops on my road bike, and I can say that they are way more comfortable than a traditional curve, at least in my hands. You're spot-on about that "missing lump."

edit: your mention of playing with handlebar angle also made me think of something I've heard from a couple older riders. It was something like, you could always tell the racer's bikes because the flat bottom part of the drop points straight back, whereas tourers would angle that part of the drop toward the rear axle.
Since tourers are pretty into comfort rather than raciness, this is probably a good practice for a comfortable hand position in the meantime, even if it doesn't look quite as aggressive.
