Mountain Biking - good mtn biking magazine?

Is there a decent magazine out there?

I think there was another thread about this at one point, but my reccomendation would be Mountain Bike Action. If your interested in learning about other aspects of the sport also, such as road biking, Bicycling is looking better lately with its new format. I subscribe to both of them.

Ya man, mountain bike action is the best one out there. Also mountain biking is coming along, and BIKE is alright. But far and above is mbaction.

I guess I like the alternitive side of mountain bike riding - Dirt Rag would be my #1 choice.

#1 = Dirt Rag
#2 = Bike

That's it. The rest aren't worth the paper they are printed on, althought Singletrack Magazine from the UK looks promising. Haven't been able to get my hands on one though.

I've read a couple of the latest issues of Mountain Bike and Bicycling and have been dissapointed with both of these!

Local bookstore should carry them. Borders, etc. will have them.

Dirt rag makes 6 or 9 issues. mostly in the summer and it is difficult to find. MBA is popular and you should be able to grab it at a local newstand.

Depends on what kind of riding you like, if you like pushing limits Mountain bike action is probably for you. I read through it and i dont think there was a thing about XC racing, basically just downhill, freeride, and the bikes that go along with them. Only hardtail talk they have is the ever popular "Is the Hardtail Dead" debate lol. Speaking of that debate in the current issue of BOTH Bike and Mountain Bike magazine they are sporting an article on it.

My suggestion to you is to do what i am doing now, buy a few different magazines from a local book store and see which ones you are interested in. MTB magazines tend to be very cheap, i picked up 3 of them for 12 dollars, and they tend to be pretty cheap to subscribe too as well. Pick up a few mags, read them and then see what you want to subscribe to. So far out of Bike, Mountain Bike and Mountain Bike Action i am leaning more towards Bike and Mountain Bike since i feel they focus a little more on XC and i like the stories in Bike, if you like DH or freeriding you will probably disagree so it is probably best just to give each magazine a test drive.

Specialized is going to be the best company for next year. Theyve got some wicked stuff coming out.

I just picked up an issue of "LAUNCH MTB", it is published in Canada. The mag is dedicated to freeriding and the riders who make up the up and comers to the pros. Their address is

I think you should head for a good book shop and look at what's offered. There are 2 good magazines in the UK I get, and 2 others that I bought but threw away. I also get the US Bike mag and even though it's obviously US-centric, I like the test reviews and reports, as generally, what's reported in the US will invariably get to the UK sometime after. There are different 'flavours' of mtb mag so look around and you're bound to find some you like.

MBUK is a good mag from England it makes sure it caters for all types of riders from XC thru to DH and freeride thru to trials and dirtjumping. It also tends to feature some irritating daft crap but otherwise its quite good. The other main mtb mag here is MBR but I find it a bit too rigidly involved in XC and barely mentioning anything else

I think that's a good summary. I find MBUK a bit irritating as well, almost like it tries too hard at being cool, hence the "irritating daft crap" you correctly mention. I prefer the MBR mag as it looks good, has a lot of good product reviews. Like you say, it caters for a different group, in much the same way that Cycling Plus does nothing but write about road bikes. I don't think I'll get MBUK ever again - I almost find it embarrassing! :)
