Advocacy & Safety - Security Officer tells me to take the bus

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Its been a long week... my bike got messed with on Friday 8/5, then today 8/9, I ask if they found the people who did this, well, he said your bike was off camera. Then I when to park my bike, at a more 'safe' stop right out side the security office. The rack is not bolded down, but has a carmra right on it. I had the trailer today so I was trying to lock everything up without it being in the way, so the trailer was in the grass over a grate (sp?) for water. He said to get it out of the grass, so I did, I didn't want to start anything, this is the head of security. Then he said that I should not have that on campus, that is was too big. I then said, I need it for books, clothing, and food something. Then he said, "Well then maybe you should take the bus. I got really mad, so I just left. I going to the dean of students after work today, also I am going to start a bike club and get better biking stuff for campus. I need your help, I have heard that bike lockers are great nice to have, does anyone know of any? I didn't find much on google, but maybe I typed something wrong. Also what would be good to have on campus for bikers?
I thank you for all your input!

No offense to any security people who might also be BF'ers, but those guys really like to throw their weight around.
All our security people are old retired "gramps"... they have no problem with our new bike racks! Hope you can get some good facilities... bikes aren't going away they are increasing! Some people have this attitude that only "poor" people ride bikes...thankfully Lance has taken the lead to change some attitudes! But it is a long time coming.

You should have told him cars take up too much space on campus :p
Or that the BUILDINGS or STUDENTS take up too much space!
What a joke, good luck in fighting this

First Story
Years ago when I was home for the summer from college, I was looking for a job. The job market in Poughkeepsie, NY back in the early 80's wasn't exactly hot. So I applied for an was accepted as a security guard. I figured I would get atleast week of training, and then they would put me in front of a grand union or something. My training consisted of watching a film (remember the old 16mm movies?) mostly about how to wear and take care of the uniform. After the movies was over, I signed a few papers, and was given a nice polyester uniform and a gun. And then assigned to watching a werehouse in the worse section of town. No training in self defence, no training in apprehending a bad guy. No training on how to reach the real police (911 wasn't around yet. And they were going to pay me a whopping 5 dollars an hour. I wonder why the sargent seemed so insulted when I told him to go "F" himself?
Second Story.
University of Charleston W.V. 1980's. Playing frisbee on the front lawn with a bunch of friends. Somebody throws a frisbee that goes out of control and hits the head of Security POS pick-up truck.
Security gurad gets out ansd arbitrarly decrees that frisbee playing is no longer allowed on campus. We laughed at him and resumed play. Soon he calls the other security guards. Soon we were surrounded by 5 security gaurds, hankering for a fight. The head of security and one of his toothless flunkies pull out their guns. Bad move on their part. One of the guys was a regular Marine in the ROTC program, another was a Charleston Cop who decided to return to college after 4 years on the force.
The cop arrested the Head of Security on the spot. The guy with a gun, was also arrested but not before the marine opened a can of Hoorah! on him, and beat the guy stupid.

At my campus, York University in Toronto, they have bike cages. These are in the parking area and behind the main security desk. I'm one of 3 cyclists that use them (places for about 50 bikes easily). We pay a yearly fee ($20) to have a key to the cage and bikes can be locked up inside the cage as well (wall-mount racks).
I'd definately be speaking to the Dean of Students about the security officer's conduct at minimum and then asking about options that the school might consider to encourage more individuals -- staff and students -- to cycle to and from campus.

First, Get the student senate on your side ;)
If you want pull on campus, this is the best way to go. They will (should be) first name basis with the Deans.
Second, there may be money available for clubs through the school. check it out.
Or maybe we (I) just abused student senate. But it helped as I was president of student senate, and I was also the student serving on the shared governance council.
Some students don't have time to attend the meetings to have their concerns heard. but a good student senate group should get you put on the agenda.
Good luck !

This is what is going to happen.
The school is not going to put up lockers for your bicycle so forget about that.
We have countless horror stories about bike racks on this forum and they appear every month. You must understand this system of bicycle parking (Bike racks) worked 50 years ago when people were decent but it's outdated. Today, bike racks are for worthless rusting department store cycles that have minimal value or use. No one today should lock a bicycle worth any value to an outdoor rack for they attract the worse element as vandals and crooks look to steal or destroy your transportation. The only time I ever had problems was when I locked my bike to a rack. Avoid them at all costs.
Today, my transportation cycle is never attached to a rack ever. I find a place to hide the cycle often times blocks from where I'll be staying. The best place is to find a parking lot and lock it in a far corner when casual walkers can't see it during the day. When I'm at a mall or supermaket, I try to find the dumpster and attach it in the back of that smelling device.
You have to find a way to transport your items without using the trailer. Only because the trailer makes it impossible to steath commute. Maybe an XtraCycle might be able to carry the load.

Student Goverment Ass :( Sorry to hear that! all my time growing up I thought that stuff was for the weird kids. And then in college we kicked the weird people out and took over. I'd give me left nut for a decent bike rack round here. Would sure beat leaning it against the fence.
I think what I need to do is make it a safety issue. We seem to have a great ability to throw wads of money at "solutions" to prevent stupid people from hurting themselves.
Example:
-Employee complained of soreness in thier rib cage after bracing a large set of cable cutter against thier chest while attempting to cut a cable
-Another employee though it would be a good ideal to label the 480 volt welding jacks (big ass plug receptacle) cause they observed another employee sticking a finger in one.
I say let Darwin sort em out...........

What's the matter with the fence solution? I think the more advanced species of cyclists have figured out how to park bikes just as securely without a "decent" bike rack. Darwin, indeed.

If it's anything like my fence, it will eventually fall over. Or some ass-clown Building & Grounds keeper will nail it with the mower. Better yet, they manage to splatter paint all over it cause they were to lazy to move it while repaint the nearby wall.
We can have 10 handicap parking spots in a 100 space lot (of a heavy manufacturing plant). We have a special little area reserved for the Orange County Chopper fans. I'd just like a rack too. I don't even need to lock my bike. Heck, I'd bring my DIY PVC one to the plant if I wouldn't get a union beef over it.
You weren't the one who stuck his finger up that welding jack thing, were you?

Why would you call them lazy when the bike is LOCKED to the fence?http://img268.echo.cx/img268/5517/reagandoh0dh.gif
Why would you call them lazy when the bike is LOCKED to the fence?
It's not locked. I asked em why they didn't move it. Two of em looked sheepish, the third state "It was on the other side of the fence".
Where's your annoying search gif when I need it? If you had simply searched the forums you would have discovered the fact that I don't (need to) lock my bike.

Don't give up on the locker idea. Do some research. Get prices. Get the student senate on your side. There's always money for interesting projects on campuses, so check around.
Propose that they rent the lockers and keep a key (this prevents the lockers from being used by homeless people, prostitutes and drug dealers). Also, the rent helps defray the cost.
The lockers probably won't be there by the time you leave, but you'll have left a positive mark on the campus.

I wonder what the number of bicycle commuters are at your college. If it is a community college that might make the number less.
Anyway, It would be interesting to know what the Administrative personnel's attitude toward your situation as opposed to the Security Officer in question.
I think that the Security Officer did not know how to deal with your situation so his response was to discourage you instead of assist you. So much for "To serve and to protect."

Clicking the link and looking into the history shows that Edgewood is a liberal arts college in Madison, Wisconsin.
Odds are: The security guard is filling his 'summer' job now and probably is not a customer service type - realistically what makes a good security officer...well, good.
While I got the general context of your post, I think the complaint was a few things. Not nitpicking, but I thought I could help clean up your post.
It has been a long week. My bike got messed with recently, and today when I ask if they found the people who did this - the security officer said "your bike was off camera."
I decided to seek a safer location for my bike at this point; I found a spot right outside the security office itself. The rack was not bolted down, but it does have a camera. I use a trailer to carry my books, food and other necessities. I was trying to lock the bike and trailer up without it being in the way, so the trailer was in the grass. The guard said "get it out of the grass." Not wanting to start anything, I did - considering this guy is the head of security on campus. He then proceeded to tell me that "I should not have that on campus, that is was too big." I explained why I needed the trailer. The guard snidely said "Well then maybe you should take the bus."
I got really mad, so I just left. I am going to the speak with the dean of students after work today. Also I am going to start a bike club and work towards getting better equipment for bicyclists on campus.
I need your help, I don't know where to look for quality bike locks. Could someone direct me to quality brands and information on what to do to safely lock up my bike? Also what would be good to have on campus for bikers?
I thank you for all your input!

Eh? I added 20 words to the total count, added much needed space where it needed. Removed some sentence structure that was wrong, corrected some mispelled words and broke it out of the box writing style. This type of communication is hard to read. It makes the eyes bleed and makes me want to stab myself in the throat. Twice. Doesn't this form of block sentence structure bother you? If not, I'm sorry - but for me it hurts. I could even show you why I broke this down in the first place. I hate to do this at Geeks expense, but I thought maybe it would be nice to do so. Clearly, your use of the exclamation point at the end really got your point across.
Its been a long week... my bike got messed with on Friday 8/5, then today 8/9, I ask if they found the people who did this, well, he said your bike was off camera.
Its does not mean it has, it is the possessive form of it. What was removed that required an ellipisis? Nothing, clearly. I guess that the rest could remain in context without much difficulty.
Then I when to park my bike, at a more 'safe' stop right out side the security office. The rack is not bolded down, but has a carmra right on it. I had the trailer today so I was trying to lock everything up without it being in the way, so the trailer was in the grass over a grate (sp?) for water.
When does not mean the same as went, using single quotes is something you do when your telling a story while drunk as a hand gesture, it holds zero value here to define the word 'safe.' Bolded and camera are mispelled. I had the trailer today? Do you normally not have it, I don't know you - I moved up the imperative information to this sentence that he was using a trailer to carry books, etc. Run on sentence and details about a grate for water that doesn't hold any connection to why he had to remove the bike, or even the grass.
He said to get it out of the grass, so I did, I didn't want to start anything, this is the head of security. Then he said that I should not have that on campus, that is was too big. I then said, I need it for books, clothing, and food something.
We've got another runon sentence, combined with quoteless quotes. Is he paraphrasing? If so, I can only guess.
Then he said, "Well then maybe you should take the bus. I got really mad, so I just left. I going to the dean of students after work today, also I am going to start a bike club and get better biking stuff for campus.
Oh wait, he is using quotes now, albiet with misused comma and sentence structure. What exactly is get better biking stuff for campus? Is he going to help the entire campus upgrade their kit? Maybe by them carbon forks? Getting better biking stuff and improving the equipment for bikers is two distinctly different things.
I need your help, I have heard that bike lockers are great nice to have, does anyone know of any? I didn't find much on google, but maybe I typed something wrong. Also what would be good to have on campus for bikers?
great nice to have - what? Maybe I totally missed that he said lockers because I couldn't follow the logic of the sentence, which led me to be nice and try to attempt to salvage it so that others wouldn't slam the thread because it was hard to digest. Wait, that already happened. Add to that the fact that you just made me do it again (I apologize Geek) and the reality is, no - it was very hard to follow. He also asked what would be good to have on campus for bikers? This would be a very generalized question, there is no specific answer that would help him. The use of bold, italic and underline in proper html code shows me that clearly Geek knows what he's doing, I was just trying to be helpful. It won't happen twice.

I try to do the exact opposite. I will attempt to either park my bike near the company of other bikes (ie. a bike rack and street post) or in areas where there are lots of people around. Though its been disproven that the presence of many passer-by's (sp?) will deter thieves [watch the short film "How to Steal a Bike"], I still have an (unfounded?) faith that someone would take notice if my parked&locked bike was being f*ed with.
I imagine that it would be much easier to steal a bike that is out of plain sight. The thief may see and follow you to your "parking" spot. Also, a bike parked out of sight may make it seem like it is abandoned and thus *can* be f*ed with.
Lastly, XtraCycles are sweet!!
