Commuting - How much do you ride besides your commute?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I would consider myself a novice cyclist, although there was a time back in the day that my bike was my sole form of transportation and I would be out on it all day long everyday. Now that I am beginning to commute again, I'm getting more serious and find myself wanting to ride more. How much do you guys ride aside from your daily commute to work? I realize some of you have a fairly long commute and that might take up a good part of your day and others I'm sure are totally car-free. My commute is fairly short, so I have time and could do with more cycling, on weekends if nothing else.

We run many of our errands on bikes. Trips to the grocer, shopping mall, etc. Last weekend we rode to the zoo. It was about one hour each way. Having a destination is a good way to get extra cycling time in.

I have found that this year I'm sort of car-free in that I still own the car but haven't used it. We also have the second (family) car which my wife uses, but not very much. We've done maybe 8,000km this year so far on the cars whereas I've done about 6,000km on my bike.
I do errands, socialise on weekends, do long training rides and commute. If I need to I'll combine bike and train so at this stage I'm seriously considering selling my car.

Depends. If I have a century coming up, the miles will crank-up, doing anywhere from a 60-80+ mile ride on the weekend. I usually take one of the weekend days off unless I've missed a commuting day for some reason.

I'm probably down in the smallest mileage... I run occasional errands but most places we go as a family we take the car. I also go for occasional rides with friends, maybe like once or twice a month average.

My commuting is 50% of my total mileage for the year, which is a little over 4,500 miles

I do 75 miles during the week (3 days) and then another 30-50 on a saturday or sunday sometimes. Unless like someone else said about training for a long charity ride, then I up the weekend mileage a bit.

Apart from my daily short commute, I also do weekend 20 milers out in the country, and the occasional single-track MTB ride. Also do alot of errands, evenings on the town, etc by bike. Don't really use the car but once a week, maybe. I don't have a 'puter on my bikes, but I would guess I ride around 50-60 miles per week in addition to my commute (45 miles weekly) - not much, but on average 100 miles/week total.
My commute is nearly 100% of my mileage in the saddle. On the weekends, I am more apt to walk to the grocery store or blockbuster or to get a haircut or...

My commute accounts for approximately 115K per week. I would say outside of this I might put an extra 50K on each month running errands and on rides with the kids and wife.

My commuting is typically between 75-125 miles per week. I often tack on an extra 10 miles in the afternoon, and try to get in a 35-50 mile ride on the weekend. Also a few errands and quick shopping trips are done on the bike. I don't track my total mileage, but I guess it's all adding up!

Commuting is 60 miles per week. Other riding anywhere from 75 - 150 miles per week in warm weather, less in winter.

dunno if it would count (as non-commute riding), but i boosted my afternoon commute to get more milage (15+ instead of 6) and then ususally 25-30 on the weekend

I do about 90 % of my commuting by bike, the other 10% is done by bus. I have no car so I ride my bike a lot. I ride everyday ( except in the winter) and every weekend I am out riding for about 3 hours per day.
My commute is only 8.5 miles one way so I have to get out on the weekend and get in some extra miles -- except for those Saturdays and/or Sundays when "family obligations" interfere. :crash: I won't go into details. :(
What a good question, I'm also interested in what other commuters are doing. On the weekends I feel like I should be riding, l want to be riding, something is missing if I dont get on my bike. And I'll lay around the house feeling like I should be on a ride. But I'm also torn, rest is good too. I feel strong and fresh on my Monday rides when I rest on the weekend.
I commute 12 miles per day, 1.5 miles of it is moderate climb. I try to live car-free too, so I run all errands on my bike. But I live on a hill and there's always that dang climb... I never get a chance for an easy relaxing ride to fill the missing "need" of just biking around.

I have two kids, I have no time, thus I never do.
HOWEVER, I have begun to assemble the parts for a homemade bicycle trailer, and it is my hope that when I have mastered the fourth discipline of cycling, commuting (1-3 being road, mountain, touring), I will begin to attack the fifth, utility cycling. The first step will be Saturday trips to the farmers market in summer to haul home a trailer of groceries.
I know a guy who rides because he likes it, and once a year or so he will talk me into a 30 to 40 mile ride around town just for run, but basically I ride only to get somewhere, and that somewhere is work.

Currently I only commute to work once a week. That is until I sell my car and then I'll be commuting everyday. My commute is about 20 miles round trip. M-TH I go for a quick 15 or 20 mile ride before work.

My commute is almost 70 miles per week. Looking back at past weeks, I've done anywhere from 80-200 miles total for the week. I'll often visit my parents or sisters during the week after work which will tack on 30 miles or so for the round trip. And most weekends I'll ride at least 30 miles unless I'm busy doing something else. Couple that with running all of my errands by bike (another 10-20 miles per week) and you've got my mileage totals. I really enjoy seeing how much of my weekly mileage would have been spent in a car. It's satisfying to know that it's usually over 100 miles which I consider significant.
Commuting accounts for about 30-40% of my miles. The rest is training, racing, errands, pulling the kids in their trailer.

With the heat/humidity we've been having, most of my saddle time has been commuting. I really hate hot weather. Once things cool off,I intend to try every single trail in the area. I'll also start getting groceries again.

I ride about 75-100 miles a week commuting to work and about another 70 miles on weekends. I love to ride and dont worry a lot about speed.

During the work week I try to get in a couple of extra of hours of riding at least 3 times a week in addition to commuting time of about an hour R/T currently, plus errands and messing around.
However, I just had a few extra days off, so went and did a 5 day, 430 mile, unsupported North Cascades tour.
Same as jack. ~40 miles commuting and grocery store shopping, ~60 joy riding.
I go more by time than distance. My commute is 35 minutes, 5 days a week. I am committed to exercizing more than 90 minutes a day, every day. In warmer weather, that 90 minutes is almost all for cycling and a little rowing. In the winter, about half is for hiking and lifting weights.

I am car free so I do all my errands and shopping on my bike but lately I have started ridding 10 miles a night for some added excercise. I might do some longer rides on weekends when I have more time.

I've been going on group rides with a local riding (not racing) club, and love it. I'm seeing roads and routes it would take me forever to discover on my own, and getting some serious miles in. I suggest you find a group that's a riding/touring oriented club and join and go ride with them, you'll love it!
On average, about 60 mi/wk commuting and 60 mi/wk not commuting.
I sometimes run errands or go to a restaurant. Other than that, the only cycling I ever do is commuting.

My commute is only about 45 miles a week, but I'm carfree, so along with errands and then just my daily fun/exercise rides, I average between 200 - 230 miles a week (a little less in the winter monts), just hit 8300 miles for the year with another week to go still from when I started counting the year (got the cyclometer last august). I just love to ride!
