not necessarily a cycling (or wildly engaging) topic I know, but someone might actually know the answer:

so...is eating apple seeds bad for you????

only if they grow in the dirt at the bottom of your belly.

hehe i was going to say that. I cried for days when I was little because I swallowed a watermelon seed. I thought it was going to grow and make my stomach explode like the early Nightmare on Elm Street movies. uh..but to answer your question...I dunno. They're probably too fibrous for your system to digest so..well...if humans did their business out in the open, you could grow an appletree.

I suppose if you eat a whole cup or two of apple seeds you might get enough cyanide to kill you.

I vaguely (and erroneously) recalled that apple seeds have arsenic so I typed

arsenic and apple seeds

and Google, as always, returned several pages of sites.

If apple seeds were harmful, I am sure someone would have required that each apple be labeled somehow by now. :p

Only if you eat very large quantities will the poison accumulate enough to kill you.

Interestingly, during WWI, the government called for Apple seeds and fruit pits. They claimed that they needed them for gas masks to save our troops.

I learned later that it was the cyanide in the seeds that they were really after.

Yeah, Mike, I heard about that, too...kids collecting peach pits, along with scrap metal and aluminum foil and leftover cooking grease.

I did hear about one guy who died of apple seed poisoning--it was a homeless guy who went into the garbage of an apple cider company and ate the leftover pulp--hundreds of apple seeds.

But I don't think you have to be afraid of finishing off that apple core!

Well, come to find out, they did use peach and apricot pits for gas masks.

I guess they burned the pit stones and used the carbon for carbon filters.

Apples are delicious and healthful! But why eat the seeds? Heck, cut 'em out with a knife, the rest is best.

I think cherry bark is loaded with cyanide. Don't eat that, either.
