Recreational & Family - Upgrading my Spec. Crossroads to Sirrus

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I'm thinking of upgrading my Spec. Crossroads. When I ride more than 20-30 miles it seems to eat me up and I only average 12 mph. I also ride infrequently on dirt roads. My LBS will let me trade up with some cash for 05 Sirrus comp w/ carbon fork for $600. Do you thing it will make a big difference. Comfort is an issue as I am 55 and have a little Carpal Tunnel in both hands. I hope this is the right thread. Thanks, RET

I am far from an expert on the subject, but a lot of people will tell you that 20-30 miles is about all the "comfortable" miles you can get out of a hybrid. If you want to go longer distances, you might consider a comfort road bike like the Sequoia.

The sirrus is nice for a rainy day commuter, but I find my self wishing for drops on it when I try togo distances. I second the Sequoia.

I have a Sirrus Pro that I like alot and which I've ridden for 40 miles with no problems. However I tend to second the thought that if you are going to regularly ride 20 plus miles that you are better off with a "road" bike particularly if you want to maintain a 16 mph plus average speed. The problem/benefit is that a Sirrus keeps you in a more upright position and you put more pressure on your sit bones and it keeps you in a less aero position. If I knew now what I know then I would have skipped the Sirrus and gone right into a road bike. On the other hand the Sirrus, while no longer my primary ride, still gets used by my wife and for shorter runs,
Thanks for the advice fellas. See ya on the road.
