Mountain Biking - would these bikes be good enough for my needs

I've mountain biked a few times and was looking into buying a bike but wasn't sure if I wanted to spend a lot of money on a bike. I went downhill mountian biking yesterday and rented a bike. I loved it. The bike I was looking at getting was either a KHS XC204 or a iron horse sinister comp. The KHS XC204
is used for $550 and the sinister is new for $620. But, after going downhill mountain biking I don't know if these bikes would be good enough, I think I might need a downhill bike. But right now im on vacation and where I normaly live there arn't any downhill trails. I will mostly be riding technical, rocky, rooty single track. Will one of those two bikes be good? Also, wich of of those two bikes would you recomend. Obviusly the new one would be completly stock but then used one has these parts, im not sure which are upgrades if any, and the seller is also including a second stratus rear shock for free?

You aren't going to get a lot of bang for the buck when buying a $500 FS bike, it just isn't going to hold up the abuse of downhill, let alone any other softer trail. would more than foot the bill for any kind of riding you are going to do, whether its downhill or All-mountain. I ride the same type of terrian you do, techy, rocky, nasty, gnarly and I wouldn't trade my hardtail for the world. Give that IH Hardtail a hard look, it's a seriously sick bike.

Neither of those two bikes will stand up to DH abuse. Both would be a serious waste of money. General rule of thumb is that half decent full suspension bikes start above $1000.

Look in the FAQ sticky at the top, theres a whole load of good advice in there - in particular look for the "around $500 Bike thread" and the "freeride hardtail" thread. For around $500 your best bet is always a hard tail bike. The Specilized Hardrock and Trek Bruiser are the type of thing you should be looking at. My bike is similar to a Bruiser and its more than capable of taking in some DH.

This is probably not what you want to hear, but a hardcore hardtail can do a lot more than those two bikes you listed, that and a whole lot more.

Agreed, thats a very nice bike at a very, very great price.

i got my 7 point 7 for 1000 bucks used at a nearby bike store, and i only had to do a bit of work to get it rideable. i was on it within a month and it only cost me about 250 extra bucks in replacement parts.

That iron horse does look sick:). Would that bike be good for dirt jump too? Not real big jumps, but just like a 2 or so foot jump that me and my friends like to build and we go about 3 feet. After going riding the rear suspension on the bike I rented was so great. Would I be able to do some pretty bumpy, rocky, rooty hills with that bike without getting bucked off? Thanks for pointing that bike out, it looks crazy! Also, what about the Iron Horse Rogue it is 70 dollors cheaper and has hydraluc brakes. Wich one is overall better, Rogue or Yakuza Bakuto?

The Yakuza Bakuto is a beast of a bike, it would handle ANYTHING you could give it. I def. think its better than the Rogue and you wouldn't get bucked off, just use your legs as suspension.
