Living Car Free - Milk cheaper than regular gasoline

Yup, $2.32 for a gallon of 2% milk and $2.42 for regular gas. I made a trip to the post office this morning to delivery a parcel, and I decided to pack it on a pannier and go by bike. Also reducing the distance of trips, shopping more locally. Last year, fuel was my biggest single expense, far more than groceries and mortgage payments, so at these prices, cutting back makes sense.

see... here's the problem... you should compare 2% milk with 2% gas like they sell at the hole-in-the-wall store down the street here. hehehe.

i kid. i haven't had a car for a few years but i'm just about to get a bike (monday it looks like) so i'm really looking forward to the addition WITHOUT the expense of the gas. i actually have a relative who's willing to buy and insure a vehicle for me (long story) but just having to buy the gas is enough to turn me off to the idea... not to mention the health benefits of cycling. :)

It's just wrong for gas to be this cheap. Considering all the expense and effort to produce it, and pollution generated by it, gas should be many, many times more expensive than milk.

gas is a lot more expensive in most european countries but don't they have much larger, more accomodating public transportation?

SOME places in Europe do have better public transportation, but this is far from universal. There are places in Europe that are just as car-centric as in the US.

Gas in Britain is much more expensive than milk. Our public transport is mixed. In London, I guess it's pretty good. Anywhere else, and places like Boston and NY have it much better. That said, I know there are plenty of places in the US not even served by a bus, and here, there's almost nowhere.

I have a company car, so it only costs me the fuel I put in it. Even so, I'm trying to cycle whenever I can. It saves me some money, and it's good for my health, and non environmentally damaging!

I would love if more people would get off their butts and bike to the store or to work when able to. It is healthier, cheaper and better for the environment.

Here in Sacramento, a gallon of milk is more expensive than a gallon of gas. At most of the stores in my neighborhood, milk is running $2.99 to $3.99 a gallon . . . I don't buy gasoline, but I don't think it's that high yet.

Gatorade mix is cheaper than gasoline too, even after you factor in the cost of tap water.

That reminds me, I have to hit the store tomorrow morning to get more of it, as well as some breakfast bars....I've been hitting up gel packs for breakfast as of late...and I really hate those things...gel sucks.

In cali, everything is overpriced. I think the only thing not overpriced was the bbq pork "po` boy" sandwiches I got from the vietnamese place down the street from me when I lived there. For $1.50...I never had such tasty grub before...bought 4 of them for the entire day....killer for those times when you have enough money to not go ramen, and too little money for pork chops and baked potatos.

Well, at least gas isn't costing a much as printer ink per gallon yet.

It is healthier, cheaper and better for the environment.

Soy milk is about $5 per gallon on sale. Mmmmmm... :D

It's a while since I drank a lot of milk, but $4/gallon sounds about right for milk..... I only drink whole milk, maybe the fat free stuff is cheaper.

Cali is high priced but there are these weird exceptions to the system, for instance places to live for $400-$500 a month in newport beach and environs, if you know where to find them, those Vietnamese sammich shops, for some reason eggs are stil dirt cheap, no huge heating bills in the winter and in most of the inhabited areas of Cali, no need for AC in the summer. Want, maybe, but not need like there is in the desert and other places.

Why shouldn't milk be cheaper? Milk doesn't have to be drilled for, pumped out of the ground, protected by a military machine, and then shipped around the world to get to your home

Milk is perishable, and requires careful refrigerated storage and handling. It also has to be pumped, shipped, and packaged in smaller quantities, which is less efficient.

Are you seriously comparing pumping milk out of a cow to pumping oil out of the ground? Or was that port just tongue-in-cheek?

I LOVE Bill Maher!!! Everything that comes out of his mouth is SO TRUE!!!!! I would love to see what he is saying about all this Katrina crap but I cut out cable :(

A few weeks ago milk was 4.59 a gallon here, yesterday it was 2.49 a gallon here???? Gas was 2.45 and now is 3.45.

My home town of Bergen, Norway is a good example. Public tranportation is crummy bus service, roads are congested, and there is no bicycle culture to speak of. Drives are hostile to cyclists and do not believe they belong on the road. I feel safer riding in the suburbs of Houston (where I am now) that I would be riding in Bergen.
