Man dies after playing computer games for 49 hours
Associated Press
Aug. 11, 2005 06:45 AM
SEOUL, South Korea - A 28-year-old man died of an apparent heart attack after playing computer games nonstop for 49 hours in an Internet cafe, police said.
The man, identified only by his last name, Lee, collapsed Friday after having eaten minimally and not sleeping. He had refused to leave his keyboard while he played the battle simulation game Starcraft, police said.
Lee, a resident in the southern city of Taegu, was quickly moved to a hospital but died after a few hours, due to what doctors believed was a heart attack, police said.
Lee had been fired from his job last month because he kept missing work to play computer games, police said.
Computer games are enormously popular in South Korea, home to professional gamers who earn big money through sponsorships and television stations devoted to broadcasting matches.

He should have gotten his arse off the computer and onto a bike! :)
Doesn't anyone feel sorry for this guy? What a loser.

That sucks. I mean, I love playing games but 49 hours is insane. The longest I have played is 13hr and that was way too much.
Maybe he was going for a world record?
No pity party here...

Almost as crazy as "man dies after pushing hard for 49 hours on a bike"

... or, "Man dies after completely blowing past all the warning signs that x is killing him." If you don't get help after getting fired for doing something too much, then the end is near.
Almost as crazy as "man dies after pushing hard for 49 hours on a bike"
Or "man dies after pushing hard for 69." ;)

CatEye's gamebike allows you to control any Playstation 2 race game with your bicycle: steering with the handlebars and pedaling for speed.
Wow, can you say STUPID!!! I mean come on barely eating and no sleep, I guess I will never understand it. What is it with the games anyways??? I tried to play and I'm just terriable at it. Honestly though my butt would hurt after sitting there for 2 hours. :D

Addictions are especially dangerous when they're not recognized as such.
I feel sorry for the guy and anyone who cared for him.

Quite possibly. The source is the Associated Press on this one, though, so it's probably legit.
I think it was Switzerland had a problem with some recruits suffering actual withdrawal symptons during their training because they were addicted to the internet. This guy had a genuinely serious problem. I played Starcraft and would sometimes go for a 3-4 hours without realizing it, but once I got hungry, it was time to go.

If you read the warnings and precautions in the game booklet or the console directions, it tells you to take break every hour. I feel sorry for him.
This happened a couple of years ago too, also in Seoul if I recall correctly.

I had an intense session in university once, played 20 hours a day for four days straight. I wished I'd taken a picture of my eyes, because they're never going to look like that again.
I feel sorry for the poor little geek.

Makes me glad I kicked the gaming habit years ago. Now if I could just kick my work-a-holicism

Hey all, he's a geek and it's a pretty extreme case. Have some chuckles at the circumstances, but NO sympathy at all? No matter how pathetic, he's still human.
