Mountain Biking - Bruised ribs, nope, broken

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Ok, I thought I had bruised ribs, went back to the hospital and found out they are broken. That explains all the pain and lack of sleep. 5 more weeks before I can ride AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Little bitter now, ciao.
Sorry to hear that.......I feel your pain. That sucks so bad especially because it sounded like from your posts you were progressing big time this season
Now knock back some vicodin w/ a whiskey chaser :D

Wow. That’s a drag. :(
On the bright side, ya had a great ride and a war story for when you get better. :) I have some times wondered how bad it can get. Maybe I don’t really want to know. I like to think that they are all just bruises, scrapes, and minor breaks.
Look after them ribs and lungs and you will be back in the saddle before you know it.
Me? I go to the water for 3.5 months. :( Maybe I should have taken up kayaking. :D Got another 2 weeks biking and off I go. Not much to do on a tug and barge. Squats and pushups is what I do and then go look at mountain bike magazine.

Thanks for the support.
Each rib on my right side has a hairline fracture. They aren't sure of all the damage just that each one has been damaged a bit. Who knows these are the same docs that said it was a bruise and not broken just 7 days ago. :)
dbd, Try standing on your bike and pedalling with bruised ribs, they are supporting bones hahaha As soon as I can ride xc I will be out there. If I was a jogger I would be good to go ;)...actually the worst is the breathing, if I walk to hard and my lungs expand they really push on the ribs...that smarts :D..

I know what you're going through in a way. I'm stuck with a rusted bike because of one of my friends, so I can't ride either. Anyways hope your ribs heal up quick and easy.

I have :p Used to ride horses, play ball, surf, hockey and cycle with bruised ribs all the time. Even wrestle;) As my old rodeo (for those of you around the BeverlyHills CA. area, thats row-dee-o :p ) coach would say, "Pain is all reletive."
If you just have small fractures they should heal fairly quickly. You will be back out there in no time.

I feel your pain brother! To be fair to the docs, my emergency room xrays (looking specifically at the ribs) showed no breaks at all. The next day, at the ortho's office, the new xrays showed 1 maybe 2 breaks. A week later, all of the breaks were clearly visible. It just took some time for the ribs to move around and separate enough to show the damage. For me however, 11 months later I'm still recovering. I'm back on the bike (that happened in April), but it was a very slow start and to date I'm very happy that I will pass 500 (total) miles on todays ride. I think jogging would be worse  Take your time, heal up, and maybe start indoors on a trainer (just to keep the legs in shape).

You're probably going to get back on that rig and ride in 4 weeks, but nothing too knarly. Try to breathe through your belly, pulling your diaphram downward. It's less rib action and more of a complete breath.
I've been on the couch for the past 6 weeks with a pinched nerve and herniated disc. I'll be out for the rest of the season. I feel your pain Bro :( I told my buddy to take my ride so I wouldn't have to look at it and maybe it would get ridden this year.
Oh yah... DON'T LAUGH, OR COUGH
