if you wear one ofcourse

do they make any that don't look all dopey?
most of helmets i've seen are ugly. i know a helmet shouldn't be a fashion accessory but i don't want to ride around looking silly all the time

I think all bike helmets look a little dopey, but I think my helmet (bell metro) is bearable; it's low profile and doesn't look like a space ship.

The cheapest one I could find.
I need a new one though, and now that I've got a bit of money I may splurge for one that looks like an alien sitting on my head. Either that or a ProTec skate/bmx helmet, I have a friend who succesfully kicked two dudes asses while being drunk off of his with one of those...

giro eclipse

its not a half-melon like most cheapo helmets, but i'd still like to switch it for...

bell alchera, giro pneumo, giro atmos, catlike kompakt 2, etc.. these are a few that look good

Bell I think. Actually it was the one which cost closest to $40.

El cheapo BMX helmet. "Pryme", i think, or something similar.

I should probably wear it more often.

Giro Xen. I like it.

You'll look more silly in a persistent vegetative state.
Do yourself a favor and get the helmet.

Giro Atlas. It's toward the low end (but top of the bottom!) and as I've said before, makes for a definitely phallic profile. I'd like to get a different one with a better fit system (this is a one-size-fits-all offering) but I'm afraid of dropping big coin on something that also looks stupid.

i stick to the mid-range giro's or bell's with a step-above 'one-size-fits-all' fit systems...$they fit well, have decent ventilation, but don't cost so much that if i eat sh*t i can afford a new one.

i'm about to purchase a giro xen - a friend has one and she loves it. tried it on, and it looks decent and fit nicely.

I wear a Bell Ukon helmet. Inexpensive, good fit, and does the job well.

Specialized Decibel. Expensive as all f*ck (got mine on sale, though), but light, cool, and it looks good and fits perfectly.

Bell Furio. Pretty solid and decent styling for $50.

bell alchera
been riding with a bell alchera for a little while now, and like it. it's comfortable, light-weight, well ventilated, and doesn't look too goofy. performance has them for 50% off. (http://www.performancebike.com/shop/profile.cfm?SKU=15883&subcategory_ID=4210)

Giro Pneumo, love it but the plastic "harness" comes loose on one side so I improved this with a ziptie on each side, I think the new Atmos avoids the problem but weighs more. And is more expensive.

Bell Ghisallo. The Bell helmets fit my head shape better than the Giro's, and I prefer the dial adjust on the Bell as opposed to the two clip/slidey things on the Giro. I've also got a Bell Influx as a backup helmet that's really nice too.

Cheap-ass Giro Transfer. I officially look like a doosh. But a safety doosh!

I used to have a $30 Bell of some sort, but I recently upgraded to the much nicer Giro Pneumo. It's more money, but it's much more comfortable. So now I don't have any excuse to not wear a helmet. I think it's worth it to spend a little more if it means the difference between wearing the helmet or leaving it at home.

Slightly OT but I have been wearing my Bell for over 7 years (I think) - is it a good idea to replace it? I have never been in any accidents but I am sure it has been knocked around during its days.

Nashbar has the Giro Monza on sale and was thinking of going for it if necessary.

a pneumo. used to wear an eclipse. then again, i get employee discount.

helmet manufacturers say replace every 3-5 years, depending on who you're talking to and when. but certainly after a crash, and after 5 years or so if you're prone to dropping/knocking around your helmet, etc.

Giro Monza. Great helmet for the price, especially if it's on sale.

Had a Pneumo, cracked it in two places. Prior to that, a Specialized S1 - great helmet but developed a small crack, retired.

Ok. I am down. The latest Performance catalogue says its on sale - so would the local Performance have the same deal or do they list their own price?

The in-store performance might have a different price or not offer it on sale (or sometimes, offer it cheaper!). That is when you say, "But it's $XX online." They have to honour that. Bring a printout to make it easier, but generally they're cool about it.

The Atmos weighs less (8.5 oz versus 9.5 oz). You're right about the price difference though.

Monza's the best value of the giro helmets. I rock a red monza. still looks like a mushroom but a cool mushroom. The atmo's on sale at colorado and so is the bell sweep which looks pretty cool. Still can't beat the monza on sale though.

Giro Encinal, Comfy, light but it has been knocked around in the last two years (visor is ductaped on). Haven't had to use it yet (thank God, knock on wood) so I can't attest to it's safety but it doesn't look that bad and is alright on the skull.

giro, don't know the model, something below $50. gets replaced every ~5 yrs or after head-striking crashes (none in 5 yrs, knock on asphalt!). I like the little ratchety adjuster at the back of the head.

Monza looks like a mushroom? Nuts, I was trying to stay away from that. I am a sucker for sales though. Btw, thanks for the help absntr.

Helmets are personal things aesthetics and fit wise. What might look odd on you or fit you strange might look great on the next person and fit them perfect. And vice versa.

The same exact thing happened with my Giro Pneumo helmet. Buyer beware!

Just got a Limar 707 for $70 at my local Performance (marked from $120). They were out of the Monza and this fit me quite well.

Giro Pneumo when I wear one....which isn't very often. Got it for free from some guy who stopped riding his brand new $5000 bike after about a week. He sold the bike, and the buyer didn't want the helmet. Score!
