General Cycling Discussion - What do you think of Bicycling Magazines new look?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. anyone see it yet, I think it looks good, I am looking for opinions on it.

It is an improvement. It would have to be. Anything would have been. The previous look seemed to borrow a lot from USA Today and Mad Magazine.

Look is less important than content. Content is looking some better too.

I rarely read it and haven't seen anything new from them in a while.
Maybe I'll have a look-see this weekend.

Next time I'm at the library I'll walk into the childrens reading room where they keep it, and sit at one of those little tables for a read.

I don't care much about the 'look', but the content and the attitude need to change before I'll subscribe again.

It looks great! I don't know what is new since the first Bicycling magazine I bought was the July 02 edition. It provides great stuff in there, different things, not-too-bad reviews and good training tips. I also buy Cycling Plus for the huge amount of reviews, not too shabby at all. The fitter, faster, further section is also great. The last magazine that I will always buy is Cycle Sport, where I like to read up on the pro cyclists! These 3 magazines, I'll stand by them always from now on!

In the Sept. with the Editor column, Bill Strickland says they're now using some freelance writers and photographers. Fellow BF posters, this may be your chance!

Oh so the new look is September edition, I bought it a few days ago. I feel there isn't a whole lot of difference though.

I think the mag has taken a little turn for the better. The articles seem longer and more in depth, and I am actually reading some of them. Now, this is probably a little biased because I get the mag free as a result of a promo by a credit card company!!

I've decided to let my subscription lapse this year, the shiney pages aren't very absorbent and breakdown to slowly resulting in poor drainage of my septic field.

I don't read it because I know exactly what those mags are: they capitalize on my perversion over bikes. Drum zines, gun 'zines, musician 'zines, I've fallen for it all before and have stacks of useless rags all over the house. I don't need another stack of rags in the corner. Besides, what can I find there that I can't find here?

I've written to Bicycling on more than one occasion asking why the cover always show a young rider in his team jersey. Why not have an older rider (over 40) in a plain (non-team) jersey grace the cover.
We (older riders but maybe not me ;) ) can look just as good as those young riders and can promote cycling just as well!

I'm still waiting to hear from the editors.

Yea!! We more mature riders demand equal rights.

I don't know just where they find these guys and gals, but they don't look like the folks I see out riding!!

Around here, the average age I see on the bike trails is about 50+!!

Bicycling is on its way out if you ask me.

I don't know, it was ok when Frank Berto ran it.
Used to have alot of articles about touring, and repair,
and did cover the pro scene (of course this was in the
Stetina era! ).
I did like the article on Sheldon Brown in the new issue.
For me the jury is still out, will take more than one
issue to make it a better read.

Yes, I agree about us 'older' riders getting neglected. That's another reason I liked Frank Berto, he did a lot of "really low gears" articles.

I used to subscribed to this Mag, for two years, and i find their articles, are write up not really educational and their collumns, nahhhhhh, just have to stop subscribing.....

this was the first issue that took me more than one scan at the newstand. gave up my subscription shortly after bill strickland came and they purged themselves of all the good writers.

the articles are incredibly myopic and geared towards either the casual or beginner - or to people who buy the expensive items.

I'm letting my subscription lapse when it runs out this year.

VeloNews gives me what I need without so much repetitve garbage.

Bicycling is too beginner oriented to appeal to me anymore.

more importantly...they did the impossible.....they ruined their forums ---> which is how i came here/looking for something fresh. they have changed the format and chased everyone away 2-3 times in last few years. one time they changed it and they had so many problems they shut the whole thing down for over a month while ironing out the problems. all the good people were purged after that.
