Mountain Biking - Do you work a 9 to 5? Do you ride before, or after work?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. I'm usually stuck at the office from 8:30 - 6:00 PM. I do 90 % of my riding after work on a local trail close to my home.

I'm getting worried because the days are slowly getting shorter here in So Cal. In a few months darkness will be upon me as I exit the office. This means my mid-week riding will have to be done in the morning. This is a scary thought because I'm the furthest thing from a morning person... Strangely, I'm looking forward to see how I pull it off.

I'm in college so I ride to and from.
I take it easy going so I don't sweat too much.
I hate the backpack with books in it so when I get to the trail on a Sat. morning when my family is sleeping I feel light.

I ride in the PM. I was really tired this evening but went out for a group ride anyway. My legs felt like crap on the first climb but I came around and I relt great after the ride.

We work 8-5 here. :) Sometimes I ride before work, just here in our subdivision which has hilly parts--so it's like you're on a trail except the road's asphalt. I can only go on long rides on Sunday. :(

Evening, at 5:00pm everyday M-F. On the weekends, I go earlier. I live and work (a teacher) in community on a campus so I don't have a commute to deal with and the drive home. I'd go in the morning, but I hate clearing out the spiders--and we are crawling with brown recluse's around here. During lunch, I put my bike on the rack and drive out to the trails. Twice a week, I ride out to the trails--I'm working on getting that to everyday.

I work 8-5. It takes me about 15 minutes to get to work, and about an hour or two to get home, depending on how energetic I'm feeling.

i work 8:00 to 6:30. Just to follow that timetable, i get up at 7 get home by 7:45, and because of the lovely daylight savings, sunrise is only just before 7 and just after 6, give or take 15 mins.

I only ever see daylight at lunchtime and on the weekends, so i am strictly a weekend warrior (too stingy to cough up the money for night-ride lights)

I usually work from about 7-7:30am to 4pm. I bike to and from work (20 km each way on a road bike) and then I usually ride for an hour or so on the singletrack near my house in the evening. Weekends are for the longer trail rides. When I think about it, it seems like I ride a lot but if I miss one ride, I just don't feel right!

I'm NOT a morning person. I have a feeling riding before work (not counting commuting) would get rather expensive for me.

I normally ride in the morning after work. I work from 1130 at night until 730 am. So I normally go for a ride in the morning and get to bed.

8:00-4:30 and try to squeeze a ride after work. On Tuesdays drive to a trail near by and ride my SS, on Thursday the roadie sees action.

Saturdays are for my son's ride and Sundays will go for group rides.

I work 7-5 usually. I don't have time in the morning for riding although sometimes I will swim or go for a run.

When I am on my bike I need at least an hour to feel like I have actually gone for a ride.

Speaking of riding after work, In the next weeks I will be forced to use the lights again. We do a wednesday 6pm night ride all year for about 2 hours. Last week was near impossible to see by the end as it was an overcast day. This week, I am bringing the light. It is always a bittersweet time of year. I love night riding and riding in the fall, but I love that sunshine till 9pm! :)

SFV Rider......assuming your trails are open at night..get a good light. Well worth the investment.

I work from 2145 - 0630, so I ride after. Only problem is that I can't get to sleep right after a ride so I'm usually up until at least noon during the week. I ride whenever I have the time on the weekends.

No way to ride before work, I work from home, live in the mountain time zone, work eastern time zone hours.
I am at the desk by 5:45 am, but I am clear at 3:30 pm, so I can usually get a decent 1-1.5 hr ride on local trails 2-3 days a week.

wow, am I the only morning rider? I get into the office between 8:30-9am, so the days I do ride before work I'm on the bike between 6 and 6:15. It's really not that hard. I'm a confirmed night owl (and barfly), but a few nights of getting to bed by 10-10:30 and it's easy to get up early for that ride. Sets such a good tone for the day, too :)

edit: oh, and as far as daylight going bye-bye, that means lights and reflectors. This fall/winter will be my first at riding in the dark, too. Whee!

I never really thought about it until recently, but living in northern areas really has its advantages this time of year when it comes to cycling.

I work 2:30pm to 11pm, so most of my riding is done in the morning or on the weekends at my leisure. In the summer time though, it's time to break out the lights and go after work when it's some what cooler.

I was thinking as far as sunlight goes. What time does it get dark for you this time of year? (dark as in needing a light to ride)

[QUOTE=Raiyn][color=blue]I'm NOT a morning person.

Id have never guessed.

I work 730 to 4 and ride after work as I need the AM to catch up on my tobacco intake due to not smoking while Im asleep. seriously I prefer to ride after work so the warmup time is much less from being already loose from working

Ok I had assumed he meant actual rides. Like on trails? If we are including the work ride then yes, unfortunately I do ride in the mornings.

Well, there is actually a trail about 10 minutes ride from work that I go to, so I should have been more specific. I actually really ride after work as far as true mountain biking goes.

i work 9.30-5.30 sundays through thursday. i usually ride saturdays before noon from around 11-1 or 2 depending on how many rest stops or how many trails i hit up. occassionally i'll ride during the week, usually after work. but if i do that, i usually ride to work, then from work to the trails, then back home (which is what i did this past thursday).

I dont count my street miles as a ride. they are just transportation to me. no computer on my beater bike . Im at 800 miles so far this year and thats all dirt. If I added in street miles Id have to add at least another 300 miles

Back when I did have the 9 to 5, I used to ride before work- I like doing my ride and know that when I'm home for the evening, I'm home for good. Then I got my aerobics certifications, and that allowed me to pretty much ride whenever I felt like it. :)

Wow, alot of you people get to work late...8, 8:30, 9! I am usually working at 5:30. I usually bike on weekends, sometimes after work, ocassionally after school during the schoolyear.

There was a time I worked 07:00 to 14:00hrs Monday - Friday. I would do the 60mi (round trip) on my bike for my road work then use the weekends to ride in the dirt. That way I get in the miles needed for my training during the week and then play time/race time on the weekends.

I work from 730 am to when ever I get done. So I try to ride after work. Lately it's been to extremely hot to ride in the afternoon.
I ride on weekend mornings at 8 am.

Trying to get up super early and ride , then get to work by 730 am isn't going to happen.

IMO, there is nothing better than a morning ride before work. I work 8am to 4pm so I'll meet my buddies at the trail at like 6am. Yeah, it can be tough getting up sometimes but I always feel amazing after the ride and have so much energy for the rest of the day. There's enough time for me to ride for about an hour, get home, get showered and drive to work. Plus, it's always better to ride in the AM during the summer because it's much hotter later in the day. I'll ride in the afternoon after work sometimes too but I prefer the morning rides.

I ride the trails every other Friday (work a 9/80 schedule) and on the weekends. I ride the road with 1.5" slicks all the other days at night with lights. The road helps to keep the endurance up.

During the summer I am not usually going into work until 11a at the earliest. I still get my share of 6:00a rides in though. And for the schoolyear, well school starts @ 7:30a but I am still able to get up early and ride before sometimes. I'm not always in by 7:30 though :)

I ride 3 days during the week if possible, anywhere between 6pm and 10 pm. I usually get in one night ride every two weeks, depending on weather.

If I ride on weekends, I ride EARLY on Saturday...usually 7 am, since it is really hot by 11. Sundays, I fit one in in the afternoon...although it's hot, I keep the pace down so it's usually slow and long.

Since winter is coming up, I'm trying to plan a schedule...I think weekday evening road riding will soon be gone. Which means more mountain biking, but with gas as expensive as it is and most trails are 20-30 miles away, I may be on the trainer some...

I rode today after work. That's why I'm still up, even though it's past my bedtime. I should sleep pretty well and, hopefully, feel pretty good about going in to work tonight.:)

I work 7 - 5 and try to ride when I get home. Of course 90% of my riding is on pavement since I live in Chicago, but there is this a dirt strip running along Lake Shore Dr. between the road and the paved bike/walking path. I could never bring myself to wake up early enough to ride in the morning. Getting up at 6:15 AM is too early already! It sucks that Chicago is so damn flat!
