Just noticed that after installing a kickstand that my crank makes a creaking noise every now and then when it is under heavy load. I checked all the bolts on the crank and everything was tight. If you lift the bike (ie on a bike stand) and pedal with your arms the creak is not apparent no matter how fast you are going. Now im thinking could it be the kick stand creaking due to the small flex in the frame?? The bolt holding that down is snug and had the lbs shop install that while it was getting its tune up/

Why in the name of all things dirty do you have a KICKSTAND on a MTB?

That's just plain dangerous when used on a trail

If it was an aluminum kickstand I would replace it with a Carbon Fiber kick stand with titanium hardware. I think it might help plus you could save some weight. I think Parlee or Moots makes them, but I forget which.

I agree ditch the kickstand, but most likely the creak will still be there. It could be moisture, in you BB. I use Teflon tape on my threads, very wet here in Holland...usually does the trick. good luck...

i dont really have space in my place just to lay my bike down anywhere in my garage since my car goes in there and it is very small and its not going inside since the thing is dirty/muddy most of the time. Its an aluminum kickstand that is wrapped around in heavy duty velcro during any trail riding of any sort.

I was joking about the kickstand stuff

take it off as soon as possible. Can't you hang your bike from some hooks or something?
How about just leaning it up against a wall?

Kickstands are useless.

a bb is a bottom bracket.

it basically is the axel of the crankset encased in a shell and has bearings that the axel sits in. You bolt your cranks to them, unless you have a new two piece crankset or an old one piece bmx style .

I had this problem when I put on some new pedals recently. Here's what fixed it for me:

Take off your pedals, and clean the threads on both your pedals and your cranks very well. Then, grease up the threads on the pedals and put them back in.

Apparently, *any* kind of grit or what have you that gets in those threads can cause this sort of creaking.
