Foo - Stereotypes about different Forums.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Anybody else ever get the impression that different forums can be stereotyped? I generally only check out the road and mtb forums, but, just out curiousity, I checked out the recumbent and BMX forums, and I was somewhat frightened. In the BMX forum there was a little argument going one, and one guy calling his BMX bike a "pimpmobile." Honestly it seemed like a bad rap video.
As for recumbent, I think those bikes are just weird, and anyone who rides them not as a joke must be a little weird. I dunno...I guess I'm just a Bike-ist.
The road and mtb forums are often the most stereotyped. First of all there's this "OCP" thing in the road forums, or that you're expected to be such a bike nut that you have all essential parts in your garage because you don't own a car. Seriously. Somebody who posted just assumed that the people reading would have a headset press.
Mountain biking, being the ever increasing sport it is, tends to attract a lot people with little experience. Which isn't a bad thing, but sometimes you get people who want stupid things on their bikes for stupid reasons. Although generally the backlash from these posts tends to be hilarious.
I dunno...shooting my mouth off. I'm sure I'll get some flak about this. Anybody agree?

So you post in the Foo forum.....where all of us "normal" people hang out, eh? I don't think I've ever been in the "normal" category before.....not sure if this is my "comfort zone".

it seemed like the only forum appropriate to post in concerning other bike forums, being the most general of all.

You missed my joke.....I was trying to be sarcastic and sterotyping this forum.....but its hard to get that across with just words I guess.

Words are never enough.
Try oil painting.
Works every time... except most of the time.
Back on topic: there's a reason for stereotypes.
I've done the same thing you did: read other forum's threads. Then close the door quietly and get out before they notice you.
It's an eye-opener.

How about expanding it a bit? I thought this was going to be about different types of forums, like gaming forums and gun nut forums and all manner of stuff. Now there you can see some real stereotypes.
I happened upon some Warcraft gaming site the other day and almost every avatar was some pathetic cartoony anime-style character. It's like these people are at the extreme end, living in their own little world. I couldn't believe how excited these people got over imaginary stuff in a stupid game!
Stereotypes are fun. I'm glad I'm not one :D
I ventured into the mountain biking forum and posted a couple of times. My own stereotypes of them came charging out and I haven't been back in there since. I still ride my mountain bike, but probably won't do it with other 'mountain bikers'.
I went into the fixed forum thinking I was walking into a drunk and high hippy liberal messenger fest. Wasn't so bad. They're just as obsessive as the roadies. Instead of "do you wear a team jersey" thread, there was a "do you have spokecards" thread. Hahha Cycling is f'n hilarious :)
Oh, let's not forget the BMX kids. I'm not even going to attempt to go in there (I still BMX) because of how I see these kids at the LBS and LBT (local bike track). :o

The normal thread was deleted 4 months before the Bikeforum started. I need a SpiderMike forum. Since I commute on a Single Speed mountain bike, go mountain biking, and have a Vintage BMX cruiser. This would eliminate the need to jump from forum to forum!

My main forum ( www.abxzone.com ) is a computer forum. And a buddy of mine over there (Spookyload) is a great guy who really helped me get started when I got into cycling. I'm surprised he's not over here....he's way into it with $6000 bikes and everything.
Can't always follow the sterotype.

true. i like when there is a thread in the fixed forum saying how they like to drop spandexed roadies on hills, and then there is a thread in the road forum saying how they like to drop hipster fixed gear riders on the hill.
always with the hills. hehe.

I saw an article in the paper where George W. is a MTB devotee. Sounds like he is pretty hard core...took the press on a 2 hour ride and kicked butt.
I wonder if he lurks on the bike-forums! What would his handle and avatar be?
Wow, those Advocacy people are f'n tightwads!!!
Let me summarize:
Everything a car does is bad!
Everything a bike does is good!
Original poster: The cyclist ran a red light taking a left turn into a one way street and I had to slam on the brakes just to avoid him while he flipped me off and said, "I have a right to the road!"
Advocacy turd: Well, cars don't stop at stop signs, so it's okay for bikes to do whatever they want!
Original poster: Even kick over baby carriages?
Advocacy turd: Yes, as long as they are on their bike.
El Twe,
Shhhh don't tell em.
There are some forums that as a mod, I don't go into.
Roody, that was freakin hilarious, you should undelete it.

His riding habits just haven't been the same since he ran into that Scottish cop at the G8 Summit...

I'm sure you'd like it....ABXZone is a great computer forum. Best feature is that average age is much older than most computer forums so you have REAL experience and less immaturity (like flaming, etc...). I'm probably around the "average" age at 34. Many guys over there are in 50s and older. Great bunch of pals too. :)

what's a fred?
fred
1) n. a person who spends a lot of money on his bike and clothing, but still can't ride. "What a fred -- too much Lycra and titanium and not enough skill." Synonym for poser. Occasionally called a "barney".
2) n. a person who has a mishmash of old gear, does't care at all about technology or fashion, didn't race or follow racing, etc. Often identified by chainring marks on white calf socks. Used by "serious" roadies to disparage utility cyclists and touring riders, especially after these totally unfashionable "freds" drop the "serious" roadies on hills because the "serious" guys were really posers. This term is from road touring and, according to popular myth, "Fred" was a well-known grumpy old touring rider, who really was named Fred.

i would pick that over an exercise class indoors. and to meet fun people mtn biking is a place. exercise, be outside, drink beerskies.

Yeah, that was a reach. I was thinking about Ross Rebagliati getting busted at the Olympic Games in '98 but he was a snowboarder not a mountainbiker. Probably does it in the off season, though. Who says stereotypes have to be based on facts anyway?

Quite a few downhillers have been busted, one with a grow op. And the freeride scene is amongst the largest in bc than just about anywhere else, and the whole pot smoking thing goes hand in hand with bc canada. I can see how he made the connection. I meet more than my share of americans here to ride the shore or whistler AND smoke our pot. :)
