Cross isn't all that big in my area, but there are a few races and I really want to try it out, but I don't want to drop a lot of cash on another bike just yet.

I have Raleigh Professional road bike (steel frame, mixed campy etc.) and a Trek 3700 Mt. Bike. Is there any way to temporarily modify one of these bikes for a race or two?

Thanks!

lots of people do their first couple cross races on a mountain bike. usually the dismount sections are short enough it's not too bad. the only thing you'll need to do is remove the bar ends from the mtn bike(if it has em) since they're usually not allowed(to help keep poor suckers from getting impaled). otherwise you're on.
