hey there, just wondering if anyone knows whether or not older (say as old as 2000) shimano xtr rear derailleurs are compatible with the new xt dual control shifter/brakes? looking to upgrade my current derailleur and don't want to get stuck with something i can't use. any help's appreciated. cheers.

If the old xtr rear deraileur was rapid rise then you will be fine. Otherwise, I think it will still shift, just backwards...

thanks much...i guess i should also ask...do the newer sram rear ders. work with the shimano dual control's?

No they don't. Sram uses a 1x1 ratio and shimano uses a 2x1 ratio.

I have a normal rise XTR and my friend has a rapid rise XTR. We both run dual controls and I think normal rise makes more sense. You push down harder to make the bike climb gears.

Rapid rise is good with dual control ( i quite like it) but terrible with rapid fire IMHO, rapid fire makes more sence and is more user friendly with with low - normal.

can somone explain the difference ith 1:1 and 2:1?

Will the dual control shifters work with hydro brakes other than shimano, like Hayes? I would guess not since they are designed to use mineral oil as the brake fluid where as all the other use regular DOT 4 or 5 brake fluid.

With 1:1, the shifter mechanism moves the exact same amount as the derailleur and cable. With Shimano's 2:1, the shifter mechanism moves twice as much to move the cable and derailleur the same amount.

Some say this gives the edge to SRAM with regards to precision shifts.

I don't believe so. (And it's the shifters - not the derailleurs - that are 1:1) :)
