Are Rocky Mountain frames really worth the crazy price tag?

Well the prices have dropped a lot...and next year I pray they drop more. Are they worth it...not imo. They offer nothing over other frames. In fact, for the fr lineup they offer an outdated design. Its a basic singlepivot, they charge more based on the name. But thats been dropping since procycle has taken a more active role in the management...

In short, no, not unless you like the name :)...

if i were to venture a guess, i'm not sure. my opinion is that you probably don't "need" race-quality frames, but I'm sure you want one. There probably are really great frames out there for less. It seems to be that Rocky Mountain has become a lux brand, so people pay more for the name because it has such a great reputation.

But I could be wrong, and I'm sure someone will point it out.

And the Vertex TSC frame is just sweet with the maple leaf themed paint. I'd probably get shot riding it around the US but it's worth it.

Actually thats the biggest reason I don't buy them. That freaking flag pisses me off. Its sooooooooo gaudy.

If it's any consolation, I like the maple leaf paintjob.

I don't like decals period. As for patriotism. I love canada, doesn't mean I think the flag looks good :)

So yeah, that aside, what frame brand should I look at for a hardtrail buildup?

The Vertex TeamSC is a smoking frame, know a few riders with them, all love it. That said, I wouldn't spend my money on one, mainly because I don't have much money! For 1/2 the price you could get a Vertex70 frame, not scandium, but only ~200g more. Still has that beautiful maple leaf paint job, just in a different color! :)

I love my Rocky, 3 years on of hard XC riding and racing and she's still going strong. I kind of wish it would crack, then I could get a new one! Damn thing will probably last longer than I will!

Of course they are good. Fine, lightweight custom steel. Yum!

Three years ago, I found an early Rocky Mountain road bike on Ebay. The description explained all about the lineage of the frame-builder an it's importance. All I knew is that I needed a 50cm because my 52cm Surly is a little big for me. Anyhow, I won the auction for like $130 and this little red bike came in the mail and was light as a feather, all Shimano 600 components and I think it might have had a Columbus sticker on the seat tube. Anyhow, that bike felt like no other. It was the fastest thing I've ever ridden, propelling me way down the block with every crank of the pedal. Sadly, the top-tube was too short and I often felt like I was going to go over the bars if I hit a bump (especially at that speed). I sold it to a short scenester girl and she tells me she crashed a lot. She blames the bike, but I blame her constant drunkeness. That's my only experience with Rocky Mountain frames, but I'd love to have another. I'm hoping to get a Rocky Mountain Metro one day. Cheers.

How about a Gunnar ?? They make good steel frames.Check out the Rock Hound.

I wasn't really looking for a steel frame bike specifically I just want an awesome XC hardtail frame.

(not single speed either)
