Mountain Biking - Newbie: Sore butts after biking.. (lol)

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

So, I can already anticipate the jokes on this topic!... Go ahead..
Anyway, in all seriousness. I just started biking and bought a 2005 stumpjumper. I used to ride an x-mart bike for some time. After riding for a few hours, I usually end up being pretty sore in rear-end, if you know what I mean. I just ride in the streets for the most part. I used to think this was caused by my crappy bike, but it still seems to happen w/ my new one. Any advice on this problem. Is this just something I'll have to get used to, or is there something wrong with what I'm doing (seat position, height, etc...) ?
Any advice would be extremely helpful. Bring on the jokes..lol
-Thanks

Yeah its pretty common, I would suggest investing in a decent pair of riding shorts, I prefer baggy shorts with the padded inner liner. This will help a lot. Start with that, if that doesnt help you might look into upgrading the saddel. I'd imagine the Stumpjumper has a faily decent seat on it with the V grove, but sometimes they just don't work with your particular body frame. Sometimes a bike shop will let you test out a few, might be worth a shot. Thats a good place to start.

take a picture of your seat, and then post it. guarantee the help will come.
as for suggestions...i found that i develop tolerances for seats. (Try biking for a while on a nice road seat, and the stump seat will feel awesome). padded shorts are a very nice thing to have, though. completely worth it. on mountain biking, i'm off the saddle so much i never notice any discomfort.
I'm sure it will improve if you make sure your bike is properly fitted, but it might take some extra to make it completely go away. Try other seats, maybe padded shorts, i dunno. And keep in mind that extra padding in the seat feels nice at first, but often worse on longer rides, because your arse sinks down the seat loses its shape.

Might have to play around and find a saddle that works. I found wtb works best for me, before I found wtb, I sucked it up and just rode. Not much I could do :)

Padded shorts as mentioned earlier will help alot. I did not seriously consider padded shorts at first. But when I started wearing them it was a dramatic difference. They have styles specfically for mountain bikers.
Here is a link for a mix of various shorts. Or you can check with you local bike shop.

Small seat adjustments can make a difference too...height, tilt, and front/back adjustments. I had my seat pretty good for a while but was bored and played with it one day...basically just moved it a couple of mm and found the sweet spot. It's super comfy now.
