General Cycling Discussion - if rule is to spend 2x salary on engagement ring.....

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

The only ones to believe in that rule is th jewrly store owner.
As for bike parts/accericies get what you need. Remember the old saying "a fool and his money are soon parted"? keep saying it and by only what you need.

Aw, Joe, come on! I subscribe to the other old saying:
"He who dies with the most toys wins!"

Naw. The rule is to spend 2 times your salary on a new bike and get the ring at Wal-Mart.

The rule is if you want to marry me, forget the ring and get me a SEVEN.

If the cost of the bike isn't at least 5% of your annual salary, why bother? :D

My wife's ring (purchased in '86) cost half as much as my new road bike...or, to put it more correctly, spend twice as much on a road bike as you did on the ring! :D

Where was this advice three years ago? :D
As is so often true of questions in BikeForums, ask your LBS. I have always found mine quite willing to tell me the maximum amount I should spend:p

Having just bought both within the last two weeks, let me share my trick...
Buy the most expensive ring you can afford..even if you incur significant debt. Then, tell her you think it's unfair that the woman gets an expensive ring as a sign of your love, but the guy gets nothing in return. (Yes, purists will argue he gets the woman...but she gets him AND the ring).
Lay it on really thick and, if you're good (and lucky), she'll say, "well, what would you want as a gift?" BINGO!!
It got me a 50% contribution towards my brand new 2002 Cannondale R3000 Si (I am not kidding either!!). Yes, it's the pink version, but for $1500 off (because it's pink), who's complaining??
Now, how's that? Now, about the price of the ring....

Have you'all read the thread by LBM on consumerism? I think that applies here.
I'm all for trading your money for things you like but why make a challenge of how much you can spend out of it. I know the contry seems to run on the theory that there is only one dollar in the world and the faster we make it circulate the more dollars there appears to be.
