The wife and I are planning our 2006 (or 2007) vacation, and this time we would like to go to Europe. And what better way to visit than by taking our road bikes and riding some of the routes made famous by the Giro or the TdF?

We are looking for suggestions from people that have travelled to Europe for a bike "vacation" or tour. We think we'd like to time it along with the Giro or the TdF, so we can see the greatest races in the world at the same time!

IMO,

The Vuelta would be the best one to follow. Plus cost wise your going to get the most bang for your buck in Spain.

Otherwise, check out central or eastern Europe. Czech republic and Hungary would also be tops on my list.

I just went on my own. Europe is quite easy to get around. You can fly into one of the airports, set up your bicycle, and start riding. If you want to cover a longer distance, you can hop on a train (just not during peak hours) with the bicycle and go. http://www.raileurope.com/us/index.htm For places to stay, there are hostels everywhere: http://www.hihostels.com/openHome.do where you can meet other travellers and get advice or even travelling companions. European people are also quite friendly and helpful.
