Lets say you just rode an incredibly long distance of about 10 miles on a pretty flat road, pushing yourself pretty good. About how long would you probably do it in?

The reason for me doing this is I'm curious on speeds of most riders when compared to me. I'm just starting out and I'm probably pretty slow (which is OK I'll get better :) ). My last ride was about 12 miles and I timed myself through a stretch that was mostly flat but contained two very short but good hills and I would ride out 4.5-5 miles and back for the timing so that would be about 9.5 miles. For hills I would call it a 10 mile flat run, and I did it in the incredbly fast time (exept not) of 35 minutes (av 17mph if I did the math right).

Sorry if this should go in the racing forum it just seems to me that it should go here.

Assuming I were warmed up already when I began, and had a road bike and my aero bar, I'd hope to average around 22mph, perhaps a little faster. The aero bar is definitely worth 1-2mph boost in my experience. :)

I think a good way to build speed is to do some interval training, where you ride very fast for a while, rest, and then go fast again. This is what often ends up happening when I ride in city traffic ;) For instance, you could decide to ride fairly easily but attack every third road sign from a fair distance, wrapping up to a full sprint when you're within 200 feet or so. Have fun! :)

Well... I once did an 11 km personal [no race, just testing myself] time trial on Ile de Couvees, a very flat, quiet road, with a slight headwind @ 5 km/h, in a little more than 17:30, so that was @ 37.5 km/h [23.3 mph]. I guess I could probably do an extra 5 km at the same pace [16 km = 10 miles], so I suspect I could do it in about 25 minutes. To be honest, I don't think I could keep up a speed near 40 km/h for a lot more than that, but I think I could do the distance.

if I really pushed myself (as if it were a time trial) I could probably do it in 25 min, maybe in a bit less if I was motivated :) speed would mostly likely be from 23-26 mph but again I think being mentally prepared also helps
