I'm back. Moved to the other side of the planet. From Okinawa, Japan to Wakulla County, Florida. One new, used car and five new bikes, a Specialized Allez Elite and an Electra Townie3 for me. A Cannondale Comfort for the wife, a Schwinn Mesa GS for the son and a Schwinn Sting-Ray and Burley Solo Trailer for the little one. This in addition to the three bikes we already had and my Burley Utility Trailer. Got rid of my old MTB. I wanted to get them road bikes too, but they weren't interested. These are what they wanted.

New commutes. One is to a place I like to fish. Even though it's 7.3 miles I leave the Allez at home and tow the utility trailer with my gear on it with the Townie. 2.3 miles of pavement then the rest is sand road mostly through the St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge. The Allez doesn't like sand roads, but it's just going to have to get used to it because now I live on one. Another regular commute is all pavement into the nearest small town, 5 miles to town, a little further to the hardware store and the grocery store. Another regular commute is almost exactly 10 miles with a little bit of sand road on both ends. The Allez likes that route, even though the last time we did it, it was in the early morning darkness and we almost T-boned a raccoon and a deer at different times.

New bagging/mulching/side discharge lawn mower. New lesson. The utility trailer with my tool box, a few yard tools, a 6.75 HP lawn mower and an extra gallon of gas on it is just too heavy to realistically tow.

I road the Townie to go fishing yesterday. Second time in a row I've done that and seen a rattlesnake in the sand road on the way back. This one was a big, fat, 5 footer stretched most of the way across the road. I just built up a good head of steam and blew by the head end since he was stretched out. Beautiful markings, he had no apparent reaction to a bike and trailer blowing by. Must see a lot of that. ;o)

Actually, I'm back home. I practically grew up here since this is where the folks spent almost all their vacation time from before I was born. Decided to come back here when I retired from the Marine Corps. Unfortunately, or maybe not depending on how you look at it. Hurricane Dennis knocked down the coast house that had been in the family for generations and that I had planned on living in, a week before we were to move in.

I had one of those for a while, years ago, and very briefly looked at one again when I was recently mower shopping. P-I-T-A. No gasoline, no exhaust and no loud noise is true. Also no mulch and bag feature which I like to fill low spots in the yard, and with the one I had, it wouldn't cut grass that was too tall, just kind of mash it down and go right over it. Another thing I didn't like about the one I had was I always had to mow with a large flat-tip screw driver in my back pocket. I could count on it going out of adjustment several times in one mowing session in the very small yard I had at the time in NC.

I'm waiting for somebody to post the picture of the bike with the front wheel replaced with a push-mower.

Incidently, you should have seen the looks I got the other day when I pulled up to the pumps at a local gas station, nearest one is 3.1 miles away, three stop signs between here and there, two on this end of the ride and one on that end, coming back, depending on which exit you take out of the gas station, there're no stop signs, on the Allez and decked out in spandex. I had my little one gallon can for the mower strapped to the trailer. :D

Welcome home. How's the retirement working out? I'm still getting used to the slimey civilian way of life, and I've been working for 3 weeks now.

Thanks, Dave. I haven't found a job yet, mainly due to not seriously looking. Like I said, Dennis knocked down the house I had planned on living in, so now I do need to work to keep up with the rent on this place. Once I find work I'm going to start looking for something to buy. Pointless to keep paying somebody else's mortgage.

Mostly I've been working my butt off cleaning up after Dennis. It knocked the house down and opened the front and back walls, so the contents of the house were either all over the yard or gone. Big shed, and it was completely gone with everything in it. Pretty much finished that yard, though. Went down and mowed last Friday. This rental house is nice, but the yard was worse. Car parts, busted toilet, old cans of paint, grass that had never been mowed, piles of brush. I've pretty much got it cleaned up and mowed. Just a few yard things I still want to do. Our TMO shipment finally came last Thursday. We've been unpacking boxes since then. Having to rent took a chunk out of the new boat budget, so that's going to have to wait. I was telling the wife, on a continuing basis, I've been working harder since retiring than I did in the Corps. I've been taking some time to ride and go fishing, but not nearly as much as I planned. Thankfully I can combine the two and ride to go fishing. :)

I still can't bring myself to not get the usual once a week haircut. If I try to skip it I start feeling like a slob. :D
