Mountain Biking - Which parts would you buy used??
Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I was planning to build a second bike just for booting around town and maybe some easy off-road. I was going to use a used Specialized, Gary Fisher or KHS frame because they are easy to get used here in Korea. I was also going to put it together almost entirely from used parts because this will be my first build and I don't want to break good stuff. Which parts would you recommend as being worth buying used and which parts would you absolutely not buy used. I don't mind buying new parts if necessary but I already spent over $5000 on my racing bike and other gear this year and I would like to keep my wife.

I love how it always seems to be a tradeoff between bikes and wives!
Let's see - I wouldn't ever buy a used pair of shorts - not for myself, anyway. Helmets either. You never know what the crash-integrity is of a helmet you haven't seen.
Sometimes visual damage/fatigue isn't telling of a product's life. I stay away from used Aluminum and Carbon frames for that reason. It's just not worth it to me. I have to inspect anything carbon in the cockpit (bar, stem) and steering mechanism (fork, headset).
But I freely buy drivetrain parts (aside from used chains) once they've proven to be functional. I'd also buy used wheels, but I'd have to check the spoke tension and truing myself.

look at a used frame, wheels, crankset, brakes, and a fork if your careful.
