Bicycle Mechanics - Derailer Adjustment (front & rear)

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

It's time to face my biggest fear, adjusting the mystical and elusive derailers. My drivetrain works... better in some gears than others, but I want to reset everything so its buttery smooth like the day I picked it up off layaway!
Can someone please give me the step by step for dialing in these wonderous, curious, confusing, cursed, wretched, dispicable, unmoral monsters?
Any help would be greatly appreciated...
Gimmie a break. The zinn book cost $20, or check what www.parktool.com has to offer for free.

Lubrication of the cable in the housings and where it goes under the bottom bracket can also make a big difference.
