Anyone have any experience with the Nashbar freewheels? I have an old Nishiki 10-Speed and want to go from the current 5 speed freewheel to a 7 speed and also replace the double crank with a triple crank. I figure 21 speeds is all I need for the moment and I am too cheap to buy a brand new road bike. Nashbar seems pretty legit but I have not ordered from them yet.

I use them quite a bit and bought quite a few of them. I decided to go the Nashbar route on these when I started seeing NOS Suntour New Winners on ebay going for $60 USD. Geez, they didn't cost that much when they were new.
Any 7 speed Regina that comes up on ebay is just nuts.
The only caution I will give you is that a bike set up for 5 speed is probably spaced at 120 mm across the inside of the rear dropouts.
6 and 7 speed freewheels were typically put on bikes with 126 mm dropout spacing. Not a ton but enough.
If you are going to use a triple chainring, in which case you only need to put a longer axle spindle on, you will no doubt have more than enough gear range, just put on a wide range 5 speed cluster and you'll be golden.
if you don't need the 7th speed you can find
Suntour Ultra 6 freewheels on e-bay for reasonable
prices. And with the Ultra 6 you don't need to spread frame.
The 7 speed stuff as mentioned is just nuts.
One way of getting it on the cheap is looking for
complete wheelsets, I got a set of campy hubs,
suntour new winner 7 speed freewheel and
mavic Gel330 rims for less than $50.00 !

I have an ultra-6 in my garage, no use for it. Cover shipping and it's yours, email me.

Crap - during one of my no ebay periods probably.
If it isn't taken - PM and I'll take it.
Can never have freewheels.
Can never have freewheels. ..enough, can never have enough...
do you need a different chain(narrow) to use ultra spaced suntuour freewheels?

True dat.......

I think so, yes, a narrow chain.
You can use the same standard 3/32" chain, e.g. an SRAM PC-58, for any 5, 6, 7, or 8-speed setup (been there ... done that; converted a few standard 6-speeds to [ultra] 7-speeds without swapping chains). The 9-speed and 10-speed cassettes require their own special, even narrower, chains.
by the way, can anybody tell where these are made? taiwan, i assume - hoping not china...

Yes, I'll answer myself ... now that I know ... in case somebody's ever searching here to find out themselves, Taiwan. Not China (yet).
