Hi,

I've had this particular rim on the rear for about a month, it was a new build not a bunch of recycled parts(though the hub was old). Today a pot hole caught me unaware and this is the result. It has separated right on the seam and I was just wondering if this is typical wear and tear or somehow defective.

No slander or insults directed towards velocity or the shop that built the wheel, I'm just curious. I was running good pressure and I weigh about 185 if it means anything.

Thanks!
Jon

It looks like you just happened to catch a nice san francisco pothole in the worst possible spot to catch it (on the seam). I personally wouldn't call it a defect, but Velocity has some of the best customer service in the industry, and a great reputation in this forum. The president of Velocity USA is even a member who posts occastionally. I'd contact them; they'll give you a straight-up answer, and they've never challenged a warranty claim. (but I don't want that fact to make people take advantage of a good company...I'd see what they recommend first!)

hit any rim hard enough, and it'll do that. you just happened to hit it near the seam and get that particular "dent." that's very typical... be glad that the rim didn't split at the seam.

Thanks for the answers. It would have been pretty spectacular if it had split entirely down the seam while riding. Chalk another one up to bad luck and timing :)

Definitely contact velocity. They have shown themselves to be a stand up company, and deserve the chance to help you out. Let us know what happens.

jonb - the glass is half-full! Chalk it up to GOOD luck that ****er didn't split completely. Velocity makes good rims indeed.

Too bad that's a pretty rim. I know I've hit some ***** hard on my velocity and have never even knocked it out of true. They are great rims that was just bad luck.

I've sent a PM to John @ Velocity just for his feedback. We'll see what he says. I guess its a good opportunity to get a non machined rim now. :)
