There was a man who owned a pub, and he owned a fine dog named Shep. Shep was the friend of every patron, and was famous for his long shaggy, ever-wagging tail. It so happened that one night Shep was hit by a car and killed in front of the pub.

Before the authorities removed the dog's body, the owner cut off Shep's tail. He mounted it in a beautiful case and placed it over the bar. The patrons could then raise a glass in a tribute to the memory of Shep.

A few weeks later, the owner was closing up late one night, and he heard a scratch at the door. Opening the door, he was amazed to see the ghost of Shep standing on the doorstep.

"Shep, you came back," he declared.

"Actually," the dog responded, "I just came back for my tail. I can't get into dog heaven unless I'm complete, so I need to get it back."

Oh, Shep," said the man sadly, "You know I can't retail spirits after midnight."
