Mountain Biking - derailleurs

Hi, i'm new to the wide range of aftermarket parts available to buy for a bike and recently got put back on the right tracks when i enquired about a derailleur.

So i now need advice on what to look for i.e what make is good and reliable and what different types and sizes are available. I havent got a massive budget (as low as poss really unless impossible) so i dont mind second hand if this is recommended. Also im not to bothered about the name/brand as long as it is a solid product.

What type of bike (year, make, model) are you trying to put this on? Are you talking about front or rear or both?

How many speeds are currently on your bike?

If you could answer those questions it could narrow down your selection.

A shimano 'deore' level derailler is trailworthy and would run you $25 for the rear and $10 for the front.


As a side note as I was looking up prices, a x.0 rear mech goes for $200?? DAMN!!

Yup unsuspended but the X.0 is awesome! Having said that though it isn't that much better than the X.9 that can be bought for around 1/2 the price of the X.0. I am using both and cannot tell any difference between the two.

Thats what I am saying. I mean, the same applies for xtr vs. xt. I am sure they are lighter but....

I 'cheaped' out and got a x.9 that I am going to use on a new build.

my bike is a Krave banned (which you prob never heard of) but it has 27 speed Sram with X7 r/fire shifters if thats what you wanted to know. And i just want a front derailleur

First the X.9 is an awesome derailleur. So is the X.7.

For the original poster, if you consider an SRAM X-Series derailleur, you will need to match it with an X-Series shifter.

Basically, if you have an SRAM derailleur now the X-series derailleur will fit with your existing shifters.

Actually since LJF just wants a front derailleur it won't matter on the brand. The front derailleurs are interchangable. If weight is not a concern I would definately go with the SRAM though. I believe the SRAM front derailleur is better it just weighs more than the upper level Shimano's. You can get the SRAM for around $30.

As for the size the best way to figure that out is to call the manufacturer or ask your lbs. The one you have now probably says what size it is but you might have to remove it to see the size. It is probably on the inside of the clamp. The SRAM fits most size seat tubes so you should be alright if you go with it. Just make sure that your current front derailleur is not top swing. The SRAM only comes bottom swing at this time.
