I recently purchased an Iron Horse Hollowpoint Mark III and am in love with it. I have heard great reviews about this bike and am glad I purchased it. I have also seen a couple of negative comments too, I am just wondering what the general consensus on Iron Horse is in general.

I give them a big thumbs up. For the price I think it is a good bang for the buck.

I just bought a Rogue from Supergo. I like the look and build quality and for the money I doubt that there is a higher spec bike. Hayes FX9s, LX RD, Juddy SL... for less than 600 bucks.

I like Iron Horse bikes. I just recently bought one......I also jsut finished stripping it down to part out on e-bay, but that's beside the point. I was happy with the bike for the price. IronHorse has really nice bikes for the price ranges. I totally agree that they have alot of bang for the buck. The components are usually a level above what other brands have at the same price. THe bike I'm parting is a warrior comp. It was pretty heavy. Now that it's stripped I know it's not the frame because it's damn light. Those hayes mx-2s weigh quite a bit and nothing else on that bike was light by any means. Only things I found that were light were the no-name seatpost and bars that weighed about as much as my easton and raceface stuff. Weird. I'd definately buy IronHorse again.

Their high end stuff is good. Such as the hollowpoint. Another company that makes crappy and good bikes :)

I think most will agree. What is your impression of the dw suspension?

Got any pics for us to admire?

Solid bike that a lot of people knock. It's a great bike for the price, although I tend to question the prices of the 7point series.

FWIW: I started to buy a hardtail from SuperGo.com a few weeks back, but decided against it (for some reason). I think their bikes are great buys for the $$$$. I often wish that I'd bought that bike that I didn't....

Love. Great guys, great customer support, and refreshing to see a smaller company putting so much effort into building its brand and reputation with some great bikes.

I owned a Hollowpoint for 2+ years and am building a custom MkIII. The dw-link has sold me to the point that I'll resist going to a 29" full suspension until I see Dave Weagle's suspension ported over to the larger wheels.

My wife bought an Iron Horse Warrior two years ago. It's been a great bike. We were so impressed with it that this year when I decided to buy a road bike, I bought an Iron Horse Triumph Sport road bike........on sale for $450 including carbon fork and double wall rims. When I replace my older mountain bike, I'll have to look into buying an Iron Horse also. Real nice, quality bikes for the $$.

I am happy with the warrior too. I just took advantage of their 20% off coupon to get my son a warrior. He is so psyched. Riding is so much more fun when you can do it with family. We are now trying to pick out one for my wife. I am trying to decide. I want to stay with iron horse. Any ladies have any input on which they would recommend for her?

My friend just bought an Ironhorse '04 Warrior Sport and he loves it but he was asking me about what type of chainguide and bash guard (low price to) put on it. Any Suggestions?

I recently bought an Iron Horse Maverick SE -- awesome bike for the $$$. The SE version is an upgraded Maverick that from what I can tell, doesn't even exist on their website. I decided to buy it instead of the Specialized Rockhopper because it had better components across the board for the same $$$. I'd never heard of Iron Horse before but I'm happy with my purchase.

Here's a link to the Performance Website that list the components: http://www.performancebike.com/shop/profile.cfm?SKU=19843

Happy Trails :D

I liked the looks of Iron Horse's Fully bikes. Very competitive pricing.

E.g. LX rear, manitou splice, wtb rims for around $700. Very reasonable.

I know Maelstrom says they're one of the best values.

i got a 2004 Iron Horse Hollowpoint Expert from bicyclebuys.com for around $1400 and that was the sale price. i think that it was normally around $2500. but anyway, i love it 100%. some people complain that they're a little on the heavy side, but i never can tell at all when riding.

Nice! You can pick up the Hollowpoint Mark III Comp for $1199 at Performance Bike after a 20% off coupon. I list those items and coupons in a deals section on my forum (in my sig tag) if you are interested. That's what I paid for mine.

The Iron Horses are really ugly. I think this must contribute to the snob bias against them. Because I checked one out against a Raliegh Ram (same segment) and the Iron Horse was a better bike, imo.

Just another good bike that gets distributed thru big outlets. They sell lots of them because they're good, but then they get lots of hate because they sell lots of them.

I think they are excellent bikes, and the HT is far from ugly. Im just bummed my lbs wont be carryign them anymore.

I find it funny that there is a snob bias against them considering Sam Hill rides IH.

Yeah,

The Ironhorse Mkiii series look like pretty good value. I'm looking at buying a 2005/ 2006 Mkiii Comp. I've been looking around, and the prices are around $2000-$2300. I'm wondering if those prices are in US dollar. Do any of you guys know the price in US$?

Maelstrom

I am indifferent. Good value for the buck, but nothing exceptional in the value range. Their Higher end bikes are great too but more equal in pricing with other high end bikes.

The security at my high school, recently got some insanely cheap IH dualy (comparable to Wally World bikes), that are waayy to small. They ride around on them with their walkie talkies is probably the funniest things ever. They conjure up plans to corner people, it's great to watch.

Iron Horse just purchased K2 bikes, according to my lbs guy. they are both good bikes for the prices. Their popularity would probably rise if they were marketed differently .

Last Spring, I bought a 2005 North Face Yavapai. It is an Iron Horse, but with the North Face name slapped on it. I got slightly better components on this one than what they were offering an identical Iron Horse for the same price. I put some narrower hybrid tires on it and I use it for touring. I really enjoy this bike.

My first 'serious' MTB was an Iron Horse MT400 and I still think they rock. I lusted after the mango yellow aluminum frame they did with XTR and Manitous but that MT400 was way rad... The A-frame design I thought was the Yin to Gt's Triple Triangle Yang. When rigid was all you rode (when you didn't trust Rock Shox Quadra 21R Magnesium WHAT????) it had all the strength you wanted humpin' it round those corners. It heralded the dawn of the sloping top tube. What I would give for a 4130 Iron Horse A-frame nowadays...

Personally, Iron horse bikes are crap. Their freeride and downhill stuff is descent, however all of their MSRP's are way to high to justify. Also, they are rarely sold by small or medium size shops with any customer service capabilities, and we all know about the shortcomings supergo's service centers.
Buy a jamis, marin, or kona. These guys actually care about riding.

Define crap? Thier frames are as good as any other as far as i can tell, and the component spec is on par with everyone else; even marginally better as of 2005/2006 when i was bike hunting. As far as thier DH stuff is concerned, id call it better than "decent" considering the success of thier racing team....i thought the Sunday was considered an excellent DH rig, and DW-link in general is considered a good system. My shop stopped carrying them because they couldnt compete with the online retailers IH began selling to. It's a shame they went that direction. I would have thought they'd learn from Shwinn and GT's mistakes.

Aside from them going the big box retailer route which im also unhappy about....can you quantify crap?

jabberwock
05-05-07, 04:17 PM
alright, crap may have been a bit harsh.

id call it better than "decent" considering the success of thier racing team

Good for Sam Hill and Sabrina. They can ride fast. So can steve peat, fabian barrel, greg minnar, and cody warren. A fast and successful team has very little to do with the bikes they ride.

and the component spec is on par with everyone else; even marginally better as of 2005/2006 when i was bike hunting

Well, Look at the mk3 team for 2007. $4,500, and the Jamis Dakar XAM 2.0 for 2007, $2,775

Rear shock- Dakar= Fox DHX 5.0, Iron horse=fox float r
Fork- Dakar= Fox TALAS RLC, Iron Horse= Rock shox Pike 454
Drivetrain- Dakar- XT-XTR mix with XT cranks. Iron Horse= x.9-x.0 mix, race face atlas crank
Brakes- Iron Horse= juicy carbon, Dakar= hayes el camino

So basically with the rest of the specs you have the Iron horse, a bike that costs 1725 more, with carbon lever blades and a slightly lighter but less durable wheelset, or you have the Jamis, a bike with Superior suspension tuneability and overall durability, and actual customer service from both the company and shops that sell them for 1725 less.

Hm.

I want to know about the "they care about riding" statement. Do you go out and ride with the Kona,Jamis,or Marin CEO's?

Well, Look at the mk3 team for 2007. $4,500, and the Jamis Dakar XAM 2.0 for 2007, $2,775

That jamis looks like a great deal. You did gloss over the x9/x0 drivetrain and DT swiss EX1750 wheelset combo on the IH is significantly more expensive than the XT/XTR drivetrain and mavic 317/deore hubs wheelset combo on the jamis. That's about $1000 difference. All of a sudden, the IH doesnt look so outrageous.

It's a straw man argument though because if we rated "good" and "crap" on bang for buck, then a lot of the posters on here have "crap" bikes.....lowcel may have the crappiest ones of all! :p

well, I know this because jake hellibron, the owner of kona rides here near me, and started the africa bike project. hmm giving bikes to poor aids victims seems like a little more care than building overpriced bikes.
Marin- Bob Buckley is a cool guy, and could probably whoop the majority of bikeforums posters. All of the people there ride...alot...and work on the preservation of the trails in marin.
Jamis- My rep is a cool guy. he tests alot of bikes for them, and is active in their r&d. His name is john samsteadt. Ever heard of him

Thats my point,I don't know of any bike companys that are not into riding. It's like saying Specialized is a big company so there people must not ride (Brandon Sloan is a great rider). Some of the smaller companys have a real grassroots riding thing going on, like Transition and Banshee. Just becuse you don't like Iron Horse dosen't mean that these others are better.Maybe your rep could fix that chainstay problem on the Dakar.;)

Yes, I do work at a Jamis shop.
Pete- Don't know what your smoking, but I'd like some. After your previous posts where you stated that Iron Horse bikes were the best and that anyone without is a pouser looser didn't seem that funny. I suppose you are doing more for the trails in marin county yourself?

pete- yeah I kinda got that that was on april fools. Wake up. Its may now. Marin cares. What are you trying to prove

Flak
05-05-07, 07:04 PM
I think the burden of proof is on you mate.

You'll forgive me if in my mind you lose a little credability when it comes to manufacturers you like. You have a vested interest in Jamis, and im going to go out on a limb and guess that your shop carries Kona and Marin too? Btw - if you want overpriced, i think Kona could be used as an example. But they still make killer bikes regardless of thier price point.

No beef with jamis, i like em....but to hold them up against IH and say IH is a bad bike is silly. Truth is, it's hard to find a serious manufacturer that doesnt make solid bikes. I don't think there is a 'best', or even a 'bad'. I think on the whole the manufacturers all make a remarkably similar product and its up to the individual rider to find the one thats 'best' for them.

jabberwock
05-05-07, 07:24 PM
flack- The shop I work at carries ridley, moots, garneau, and Jamis is the only larger bike manufatcturer we carry for joe commuter and jane recreational cyclist.
Pete- maybe i should have said " Marin bikes contributes to the preservation of trails in Marin County" I stil don't understand what you are trying to tell me. remember your tampons

Really no bones to pick with anyone. I had a 2005 Rockhopper (good bike), test rode a 2006 IH Warrior Expert and bought it. Love the SRAM X7's, Avid BB5's discs, Marzocchi shock, and geometry feels right. Nicely spec'd bike at a killer price (hit the Performance Bike sale with additional 20% off). It's a hardtail I'm riding for a long time to come.

Anybody know about the weight of the Warrior 3.5? http://www.performancebike.com/shop/profile.cfm?SKU=23358&subcategory_ID=3050

Performance Bike thinks it weighs ~28 lbs, whereas IH had told me yesterday that their bikes run ~30 lbs. Unfortunately, the IH web site (http://www.ironhorsebikes.com/warrior.html) doesn't have the 3.5, just the 3.0 and 5.0 models listed. This is confusing: why would the brown bike weigh 36 lbs, vs black at 31.7 lbs?
http://www.ironhorsebikes.com/Warrior3.html

The fork on the 3.5 is a Marzocchi Race 100 mm travel, but I can't find this fork online at all, to spec it. Can I assume it's on the light side?
