I'm tryin' to build a very low budget fixie as a method of transportation around school. I have an old 10 speed in the garage really a pretty frame and everything, in fairly good condition. I was hoping to just remove the small chainring leaving a 53 as my front and hopefully a 20 as my rear gear. However, as I'm a novice to this idea, I was hoping I could find a way from you folks on how to convert the freehub to a fixed gear without actually having to buy a new hub/wheel. Thanks so much for any help. And if there's anything else wrong with what i've said, please let me know, as I can use any help i can get!

If it's an older 10-speed, the chances are slim that it has a freehub. It probably has an older thread-on freewheel. Search the forum for 'loctite', 'suicide hub', and 'bumbike'.

I personally run a bumbike setup and have had no problems.

I read somewhere that you can take a freewheel apart and flip a pawl (?) around. So of course like jonny on the spot I run my exited ass home to give it a try. Pulled everything apart, flipped pawl (or whatever it's called), and reassembled. Took the old girl for a test ride around the block when I noticed that it was indeed not, I repeat, NOT fixed. Now I had the joy of a freewheel both forward and backward. Midly defeated I returned to the garage and finished my beer.

If you are to try the freezing up of a freewheel use either brazing or a crapload of JB weld. Just use your head and on the brakes. Keep in mind this is comming from a brakeless rider.

Hope this helps.

If it actually is a freehub, check this article...
