General Cycling Discussion - wow...I saw other cyclists on my ride tonight

I went on a casual ride around the neighborhood after work and passed not one, not two... but SIX other people on bikes! This is unheard of where I live. I was only out about an hour or so and riding at a very leisurely pace, enjoying the nice weather. I will occasionally pass another person on a bike, or a couple of kids maybe, but never SIX people in that span of time. Two of them had shopping bags from a nearby supermarket! Dare I think that gas prices might be leading to this overwhelming number of bicycles on the road? :p

Yikes. I probably saw about 40 cyclists on my 1.5 hour ride last night, and no it wasn't an organized group.

I don't know what I'd do if I saw 40 other cyclists on a ride. That would be both cool and weird.

Get signed up for Lance's Ride for the Roses in Oct. and come down to Austin and see 6500 cyclists. Seeing 20+ cyclists on a ride is cool, but is nothing compared to 6500.

On a typical ride, I might see six other bikes at any given moment on the trail ahead. On the entire outing I might pass by hundreds.

The club ride last weekend had a small group of 20, which is a typical size.
Last May at Bike New York there were more than 30,000 in a group start. Now that's a crowd.

Heh. I think it's weird if I *don't* see other cyclists on my rides. So many around here. And a lot of good ones, too . . .

2 hours rides I might see 2 or 3 people. If I get on the greenway I will see another 3 or so.

I think I found your problem. Me, I usually see other people when I'm on the bike, but that's only because I'm usually on the bike.

On a weekend, there are usually a gazillion riders around here. I typically have about 40 folks show up on our club's Saturday ride.

Get signed up for Lance's Ride for the Roses in Oct. and come down to Austin and see 6500 cyclists. Seeing 20+ cyclists on a ride is cool, but is nothing compared to 6500. Ragbrai-about 18,000 give or take it's a hoot.

My friend got me started back in bikes about five years ago.
I've had some people start riding cause of me. I think its neat.

Other bikers around here are rare.

One time I saw this guy on a mountain bike climbing up the broken asphalt/ lower angle side of a hill, he saw me climbing the grassy/ higher angled part and he was checking out my bike.

I know how you feel! I never see other cyclists around here. It gets kinda lonely :(

Yeah I always pass a couple on the MUP, but rarely do I see one in the street.

i usally see 1-5 people on a Weekend morning ride. Weekday mirning ride- none.

I would see about 6 people when riding in early March. During the summer the pathways get so congested you can barely move, and on most major streets you'll see at least one cyclist every block. Hence my comments before that bike lanes are sometimes added to increase road capacity!

Finding a place to park can be a real nuissance too. The mall my PO box is at can fit about 100 bikes under the office tour - all racks full. The front racks, maybe 12 bikes, full. Side entrance by Zellers, full. Back of the mall... I guess I can squeeze on more bike in here :(

I think the point of her post was that hers was not an organized ride. I rarely see even one other cyclist on my rides around here. I sure would like to see more so I may be able to suck a wheel for awhile :D

Here i see many different kinds of cyclists every day, mostly adults, mainly utility cyclists of all ages & full-on racing geeks (no offense) :)

The diversity here is nice; in Eastern Conn. there were mostly young kids & a few elderly folks on balloon-tire or road-worn 3 speeds, & being forced off the road, having people drive up next to me & scream things, or having objects thrown at me was common. I'll never go back there.

That sounds like a nightmare. I've heard stories like this where I live, although I haven't experienced much of that. Mainly just honking and dirty looks from time to time. In fact, I always thought that was part of the reason I never saw anyone else biking. I guess some places are just more bike-friendly than others.

That's true.

People look at what other people, specially the ones they know, are doing and get curious. Inactive people think of bike riding such a big thing until someone they know shows how easy it is.

I hope more peple ride their bike in more casual and visible way, like going out to get Sunday paper or get a cup of coffee(in a casual cloth, I might add).
