So I've got this wetsuit, but I'm not sure if it's ideal for use in my first triathlon. I'm concerned that it may possibly be fairly cool the day of my upcoming race and that I'll need it, but it's hard to say because the weather up here in MN can vary a lot this time of year.

My wetsuit is a Stearns "shorty". I purchased it a couple years ago for kayaking in colder conditions, and it was on sale, but never actually used it... heck, hardly use my kayak too. It fits pretty well with my tri-shorts underneath, and I know I can get out of it quickly during transition. Biggest issue is that the sleeves on it are a tad tight, and it may hamper my swimming stroke.

It's an older version of this one:

Anyway, what do the experts think? Either way, I don't plan to purchase a tri-specific wetsuit at this time. Just wondering if what I have will work ok. I plan to actually test it in the next week.

Try it in the pool. Just rinse well in the shower when you are done. If it is to tight in the shoulder you may want to try and rent a tri suit.

Don't wear that wetsuit. It's not designed for swimming, which means it will fill with water in the wrong places and cause you to have a lot more drag.

Besides, the water has got to be close to 70 degrees or more. You won't be cold in the water. What lake is it in?

It's in the St. Croix River, in Hudson Wisconsin. I've been wearing it for all my training swims so far for the last couple weeks and I'm not worried. It actually helps me more than it hurts because I'm not the strongest swimmer and I sink super fast. It does fill with a little water, but it's really not too bad.
