'Meth heads' send bicycle thefts sky high
Police say methamphetamine users' urge to fiddle with bikes satisfies need to keep busy

Crystal methamphetamine's method of destroying brain cells is well documented.

But police are now coming to a startling conclusion about another side-effect of the drug -- bike thefts are skyrocketing because crystal meth users, or "meth heads," find disassembling bikes and fiddling with bike parts satisfies their need to keep their hands busy while on the drug.

"We've come across lots of sites littered with bikes and bike parts," Const. Peter Lane said.

"They sit in the bush with hundreds of parts just fiddling with them all day."

Crystal meth is a stimulant, but because it destroys brain cells at such a rapid rate, its users are drawn to menial, repetitive activities.

"For some reason, they find fiddling with bike parts satisfies that need for stimulation," Lane said.

The result has been a huge increase in bike thefts, said Lane, who couldn't provide any figures.

The recent discovery of several bicycle "chop shops" hidden in the bushes of Victoria parks has drawn attention to the rise in thefts and its connection to crystal meth.

On Wednesday, police busted a chop shop under the Point Ellice Bridge, where they're regularly called by local businesses who spot people stashing bikes and bike parts.

A massive illegal campsite uncovered in Beacon Hill Park last weekend was littered with bikes and bike parts, while in mid-July, police cleared out a site on the edge of Cecelia Ravine Park that was strewn with bicycles.

Police are still investigating to what extent the bicycles are being reassembled with different parts, painted and sold on the streets for drug money.

Police often find crystal meth users carrying around tools to take apart and reassemble bikes so they can't be identified as stolen.

But going to such lengths often makes a stolen bike stand out even more.

"An officer gets suspicious when he sees a bike with a really expensive frame but rusty parts," Lane said.

It doesn't help them return the property to its original owners, however.

"When they've been taken apart and painted, it's really hard to identify them," Const. Theresa Tuttle said.

With theft rates rising, bicycle owners are struggling to protect their property.

Cycling advocate John Luton, who has lost parts off his bicycle several times, said cyclists need to take measures to protect their bikes, such as locking bikes in visible, high-traffic areas.

"People will grab anything if it's available," said Luton, executive director of Capital Bike and Walk.

He added insurance against bicycle theft is expensive and the deductible is often too high to make it worthwhile.

PROTECTING YOUR PEDALS- Invest in a good lock- Lock your bike in a visible, high-traffic area- Take advantage of downtown businesses like Chain Chain Chain Bike Check and Cycling Services and Reckless Bike Stores that will store your bike for you while you shop- Engrave bicycle parts with your driver's licence number so police can trace them if your bike is stolen

Just leave a Rubik's cube on your seat and they won't be able to resist it!

I live in the Portland Metro area, I have felt the effects of meth heads, having had several bikes stolen since living here. It is terrible, the effects meth has on people but I can't say I take any pity on them. Just say NO to drugs.

I don't believe meth heads want to work on bikes. Meth heads only want one thing: meth! If they're stealing and working on bikes, it's ONLY to buy meth with the proceeds...

It they want to work on bikes, they should just get a job at a bike shop building bikes, and then they could use the money to buy more meth!

Not sure I'd want to ride a bike built by a meth addict though.

Give a man some meth, and he geeks for a few hours. Teach a meth addict to build bicycles, and he geeks for the rest of his life. Imagine how fast those guys could do repairs.

And yes... Drugs are bad, m'kay?

I just wanted to make comment to this post in that it could possibly
be off base. I have been made aware, through extensive research,
personal interviews and various case studies that methamphetamine
users who are stealing bicycles are doing so for for the pure lucrative
$$$ involved, .. so that the user can keep buying his drug. Bikes have
become an easy target hefting a substantial 'income.'

Although certainly there is some truth to the post it is somewhat
misleading. Contrary to popular belief, many methamphetamine users
have above average intelligence. Quite often choosing the drug over
'wise' decisions, or rather the drug is choosing, .. and is more potent
than what may actually be of interest to the person. Many meth users
are professionals in the areas of creative arts,..writing, acting as well
as social/liberal arts, analytical data, research, and various technical
fields and is not capable only of "menial" tasks. Many really very quite
bright individuals fall victim to it's powerful addictive qualities, yet live
a 'normal' lifestyle for 6-10 years or more before dramatic changes will
become obviously apparent.

Many users exhibit extremes and confusion, these attributes are typically
persons with related mental & psychological factors in the get go.

What a load. You need to live in a meth-infested neighborhood for a while.

I have a sister who was very intelligent. She is a meth head now. There is no creativity, no productivity, no positive traits whatsover. She fiddles with stolen stuff just like the original article mentioned and turns it into broken crap. One of her meth friends stole a nice Cannondale mountain bike, hosed down with random bursts of black spray paint, and tried to sell it. Stashed in my parents backyard. By then it was unrideable. So much for the bike repair business. It was abandoned by a dumpster. Tweekers are amoral self-centered wrecks who can't see beyond their next fix. I hate these people. I have no sympathy left for them I do feel for those around them.

I performed chemical warfare on my brain for a couple decades. Did methamphetamine one time in the '80s. I was miserable for a day and a half. I loved getting high at that time but saw no reason anyone would do that crap more than once.

Seriously, will a rubik's cube keep them occupied? Any other tips and suggestions? I need to know.
I have students who come in high. They have to finger-f##k everything they can get their hands on. If I could give them a rubik's cube to keep them occupied, it would be great. I expect they would pull it apart and ruin it.

I ride a spray painted bike and carry bike tools in my backpack all the time; I hope any profiling police officers can tell the difference between a hipster and a meth user.

I had several geeter squads living in the neighborhood, no one can degrade a home/apartment as fast as they can. No stone was left unturned, they were constantly on the move and into everything when they weren't sleeping it off.
