Wow, just followed a fixie rider up one of our local grades (Hwy 9, about 2000' in 6 miles), and he was totally kicking butt! I'm on my gearie flailing all over the place in 39x28, just trying to keep up enough to see the guy, and he's just moving right along in 48x18. I'm not sure he was even breaking a sweat.
There's no actual content in this post, just wanted to give a shout out to my fixed homies, you guys that can do this kind of thing are the s**t, my hat/helmet is off to you!

That's sweet. I just got back from San Francisco, and I had some fun times flying past some people on hills on geared bikes. Granted, I was standing up and cranking hard, but I was still passing them. It was fun.
I kind of want to move there now. :D

It is kind of funny timing as I'm just getting my crap together to convert an old MTB to singlespeed . . . now I'm even more fired up to do it. I talked to the guy at the top for a while; he says he's got a few other bikes but pretty much rides that one exclusively. I just thought it was pretty damn cool to be able to tackle that grade with that gearing and not slack off the whole way. Awesome training! Bet it's an interesting ride down, too :)
Proof that not all bay area fix riders have them just for fashion accessories.
Did this ride this morning: http://velo.metanovus.com/index.php?centerX=-121.91712856292724¢erY=37.381036256562055&zl=4&fl=m-e-h-0&polyline=whpeF|pajVb`@uf@kAod@~gCuLbjBhe@|n@pU~Om_@rP{RpS_J|DhYzFvJjBnTpHQz@z]jy@iCxk@uLtDlAfC_YiDaOneAaRfQbDfGoBrB_J|YlPfAbNnB`BxHk@rHlPzDuEhAqGdGa@x@xRpLXpKlLjFfNdLzGwDvMjAzGfC rDmBxRnkAnXxByCro@c@pE~AdcAse@z|@sl@dF|LrZ_YtV_`@`]kb@`JwIaCeE`JyNhp@**sBno@inBdWst@tpA{xAo@_C`N**OrBzCrg@wj@rB{@|_@_d@`GeA|GmImCgFvH**Edt@em@|J**Ltl@oaA`i Ag{A`sAc`Btk@ap@bRa]sByCpUoXzIkO**@cb@bNq@n[c_Azw@itAhDgr@lbBqcEt@sGn_EqqHdUaOb[ut@dOiRbDmc@dIka@~[oaAfZyJ|J_]u@oT~UmoAt]a]pXmEu@wXp^kiCjBo~AlBqiDrF**x@k|@c@lB{e@lIoJnPqJ{L**b@rRaO_Rui@~b@**SpD{D{Si]kR_h@di@w_@eHs^wA_B
Although I did see two guys walking perfectly good, beautiful, brakeless track bikes down Mission two days ago, no girlfriend walking with them, no excuse, just two, seperate, hipster looking ******s walking their bikes with "look at me" swaggers. Sad, in a "baby-panda-sitting-in-a-pile-of-his-own-steaming-poo", kind of way.

Had two kitted out roadies and one roadie/advocate-type riding with us this time too. Dropped team-lycra right before Redwood City, looked back at one point on Old County Road and they were waaay back (they knew the way so we kept on going). The advocate-type hung with me all the way, although he did have to stop for a while to work a cramp out of his leg, which is cool, I cramped up the first time I did that ride too.
