Classic & Vintage - anybody know about a "free spirit" bike?

i found an old bike in a trailer... one speed, front and back fenders, has "free spirit" painted on, very comfortable. i cleaned it up, put a schwinn 3-speed planetary on it, front brakes and it came out a very comfortable and reliable bike. id like to know a little bit about it, i have found very little relating to it. most i can guess is its late 50's early 60's. ill post some pictures and the serial number tomorrow.

The Free Spirit line was made and distributed by Sears. They were heavy bikes but very well made. I still have one that my mom purchased in the 80's. Not sure of the components haven't even looked at it in ages.

The early Free Spirits (1960s), made in Austria by Steyr-Daimler-Puch, weren't bad. The later boat anchors made by Huffy are a different story.

My sister's first ten speed was a Free Spirit. I agree this is a house brand, but I don't thought it was JC Penny or Sears. Unfortuntely, hers was bed news from the start - out-of-round wheels and cheap components. If you got an older one and it seems fine, more power to you.

It was Sears.

My first ten speed was a Free Spirit, too. It was from the early 70s. I loved that bike.
