Mountain Biking - Fenders - Yay or Nay

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Please say why you voted either way. Thx

little mud on the back never hurt anyone, nay
yay for the front, mud in the eyes not all stings, it can make you fall, thus busting your bike, no good. nay for the back, how else will people know where you've been? besides, muddy backs are like camo in the woods. get ahead of your buddies on the trails and then peel into the woods and hide. you have no idea how funny it is to watch them ride by you and then stop and wonder where the hell you went.
Please say why you voted either way. Thx

To answer the question I use Topeak DeFenders on my commuter bike when the weather sucks, but I don't bother off road
First: Thank you for your useful replies. You're obviously very knowledgeable and provide a lot of good information.
Second: I'm not going to quote your message since it is directly above mine and in most other forums I visit, it's considered poor ettiquette to post images such as your that unnecessarily use bandwidth and don't relate to the topic on hand.
Third: I've read my terms and conditions of use and the forum guidelines and I can't find anything prohibiting so-called AOLese or TXTSPK.
Fourth: What I did find were sections relating to Respectfulness and Harrassment. You might want to take a look at those and I can clearly see you were calling me and idiot. I clearly am not.
Fifth: I'll not respond on this topic in this thread any longer. You can PM me if you like as that is the appropriate place for this type of thing. You took your shot at me publicly and I'm taking one chance to defend myself. 'nuff said

Having dirt fly up to your mouth for a quick taste isn't great. I don't like the look of fenders, but they've got a purpose and that is what counts.
I use fenders for when I'm riding to work. Showing up for your job with a big streak up your back isn't the best idea.
However, I take them off when I'm going on trails.

I too use mudguards for road/commuting. Never really got on with them off road.
Turning up soaking wet for 8 hr of work isn't nice but returning home muddy isn't so bad.
Most mtb mudguards are useless compared to traditional full length mudguards. They add weight, get knocked about and can break.

Disruption
Posts which intend to disrupt the topic of conversation or steer the topic away from the focus of the forum and related news. Disruption can include harassment, multiple user profiles, multiple posting of the same post and posting completely off topic messages. Please do your best when it comes to grammar, punctuation and spelling. Excessive use of "AOL'ese" and "hAx0r" talk can be very disruptive so please keep it to a minimum. You won't get away with using it here at all as far as I'm concerned. Once it starts it just gets worse and worse until there's nothing but moronic gibberish everywhere you look. (Look at the BMX section for an example)
Fourth: What I did find were sections relating to Respectfulness and Harassment. You might want to take a look at those and I can clearly see you were calling me and idiot. I clearly am not.Actually if I wanted to call you an idiot I would with no hesitation. I'd come right out and say it.
I did however attack your use of a bastardized abbreviation commonly used by illiterate 12 year old AOL'ers.
We do have standards of communication here: AOL'ese is a hybrid of "1337" (read hacker language) and abbreviations devised by slow typists to keep up with real time chat sessions. It doesn't belong here where you have all the time you need to type out a understandable, intelligent looking response.
This forum is visited by THOUSANDS of people a day. Some are members, MOST of them are guests who are looking for someplace where they can ask a question and get an intelligent response. "I wud git dat b4 u 4get or ur gunna be srry thx" Is NOT an intelligent looking response no matter how correct the information (once translated) is.
You want others to respect your opinions? Type them so anyone can read them not just "ur homies" I don't expect perfect spelling and grammar. Hell half the time I ignore people who can't capitalize ( that irks me too).
As for whether or not you actually are an idiot remains to be seen. I do tend to give people the benefit of the doubt until they continue to exhibit the same behavior after being advised against it
Fifth: I'll not respond on this topic in this thread any longer. You can PM me if you like as that is the appropriate place for this type of thing. You took your shot at me publicly and I'm taking one chance to defend myself. 'nuff said

Tsk tsk. Why would I bother with Columbian cocaine products when Afghan heroin is so much more profitable? Especially since the cartels are so well entrenched. As for the LSD that could indeed prove useful in a fiendish plot.

Thx is not "THX" so lighten up.
Excessively uptight scolding should be avoided, along with overuse of punctuation to hide a limited vocabulary ;)
So what is the thread about, anyway?
I use a fender on my DH bike if it is really muddy, mud on goggles in a race run or in or eyes is not a good thing. Another way of "making" a fender which is very effective, but a bit ugly is to put a piece of tube between your arch and lower crown (only works with DC forks)
Here is an example, last race around 50% of riders were running a tube or similar as demonstrated below or were running fenders

Wow, just joined and was reading through the forums - found this topic and was interested as I have begun riding my bike to work and was considering fenders myself.
I say wow, because it seems like people have their panties in a bunch over someone's use of thx. Let's get a grip folks, its not like he killed someone.
Having said that, I think its funny that the folks most upset by his use of thx, are using nonsensical words like AOLese.
Not a great way to build community IMHO. So with that, I say WTF is wrong with asking someone nicely not to use TXT SPK, rather than posting a picture in an effort to flame him. This whole thing probably would have been better handled via PM rather than flaming the guy in the open forum. IIRC, its bad form to be abusive to people - or at least that's what I thought I read in the rules when I signed up.
Finally, since I'm a n00b, let me just say OMFGHI2U!

Okay, then. I guess I'll post on-topic.... Um, I voted 'yay' because I run a quick release fender on the back of my FS. Makes it easier on my car seat since I frequently get muddy. Don't mind a little mud in the eye, nose or mouth. I'll probably just wind up taking the fender off soon, anyway. Not too much need for it lately.

Yay
Started a race last year and had taken off my fenders. I dont even know why I took off my fenders. Anyhow, after the first 8 km run I grabed my bike and went for it, there was mud on the track that threw up below my glasses and into my eye. I thought I would have to quit the race for a while but it cleared with tears after 3 or 4 minutes. I had a small stick thrown into my eye before also, without my glasses that time.
When I have a front fender it stops a lot of crud getting thown onto my face and I never notice it hindering me.

My thoughts about fenders, you only need fenders for muddy conditions. The only exception would be a frame shroud if you ride in rocky conditions.
You could also get away with them when you go to the local bike path so you look cool (or at least think you do) to the unknowledgeable non-cyclist :p :p

Placid was correcting Raiyn's punctuation errors.
I think everyone should back off from these type of exchanges. I think we have more posts discussing aolese than the topic at hand.

I run fenders primarily for commuting (was pouring today on my ride home for work) and don't usually put them on when I go trail riding. I did put them on one day I went riding after a big rainfall and was glad I did. It kept the crap off my face. I didn't really mind/care about the fender on the back but the one in the front really worked.
I don't really notice or care about "the look" of the bike . I don't think the fenders affect the look of the bike either way.

The paradox in all this is that discussing AOLese is one of the biggest culprits of steering away from the topic at hand. Generally speaking, I agree with the AOLese police as there are examples of new members who show up with just gibberish. In this case all we had was a simple "thx" to close an intelligent question.
Damn - I'm contributing to the disruption. I'll have to add a statement related to the topic at hand.

How effective are the downtube guards compared to fenders? In my mind these are only useful to protect the bike but offer minimal protection to the rider as the moment the front wheel turns there still is spray. Anyone have one of these installed? How effective do you find them?
Whew...
The front fender in muddy conditions is a good idea but otherwise not really needed.

Get a front fender if you plan on racing in the mud and need to see. Otherwise, save your money for something necessary. :)
I made a downtube mud guard out of a plastic laundry detergant bottle. it looks pretty crappy but works super well. I painted it black and zipped tied it to my downtube.
I purchased one for my rear tire. in the NorthWest we get a lot of rain and the trails are often muddy and wet. on a 20 mile or so ride, your going to get muddy and wet despite having fenders/guards.
I don't see anything wrong with 'thx.'
I do find large obnoxious and insulting images rather offensive.
Fenders can help protect cycles innards, but I avoid them unless using the mtb for commuting.

thx is very minimum and very non disruptive. The rule was changed to allow for people who use aolese intelligently. The rule is 'mostly' in place to deal with kids who use aolese exclusively. THOSE are disruptive posts.
Consider that the end of the topic in this thread, lets get this back on track please. Although how much can you say about fenders, they generally look ugly but do the job. I don't use one for the rear but I find the front invaluable.

well I don't have any other pics of it. just use your imagination.
1. take a plastic jug
2. take a knife with a dull blade
3. cut out the flat parts of the jug best you can
4. put holes in it with a screwdriver so you can use zip ties to hold it onto the downtube.
looks like crap, works great.
