General Cycling Discussion - bike shoes

I am saving up some money to buy clipless pedals and shoes. In the meantime what kind of shoes should I wear that will fit in the little cage thing and be comfortable for bike rides?

Any sneakers/tennis shoes/cross trainers/etc. will be fine.

I bought my shoes and pedals at the same time. I just bought the cheapest ones on the shelf that fit the cheapest clipless pedals, and I'm plenty happy with it.

I'm sure there are advantages to the higher-dollar items, but if you don't intend on racing, I really don't think it's worth it to save 8 ounces of weight by getting the "superior" items.

I spent around $120 for Shoes, cleats, and pedals. Just the other day I had to take my dad's bike out for a spin, he has toe-clips. My feet fit in those just fine for the 12mile trip.

I should note, however, I don't wear the traditional cycling shoes. I wear the mountain bike shoes that have the recessed cleat. I find it is a lot easier to walk in these than in standard shoes. I'm sure standard shoes there are plenty of riding advantages, though.

If you just want clipless pedals for the basic advantages, don't bother getting the high-dollar ones. If you want them for their racing advantages, you're better off with the pricey ones.

Pumas! Or Converse CT*******, but the sole is flimsy.

thanks for your advice. ill probably get the cheapo pedals and shoes. i ride often, but not often enough to spend 200 some dollars on shoes

Keep a sharp eye on Nashbar's shoe section. Just bought a pair of MTB shoes that were 'orginally 179.99' for $44.99, Nashbar's double sided SPD pedal: $20. You can do the math. :)

I did the same thing...not racing - I got shoes, pedals and clips for about $110. I also use the moutain bike style shoes (Lake MX 101 (www.lakecycling.com)) and bought them at Alfred E. Bikes for $55 or so.

Skateboard shoes work great, soles are durable and non slip, they're fairly smooth and slip into the toeclips easily, and they're good quality for the price.

I just got clipless pedals and got some mtb shoes for those, they look heavy but they're really light, and are fairly walkable.
