for years I have seen mainly females with their helmets tipped way back on their heads. but in the last two weeks I ahve seen three different people two women and one guy with them on backwards and tipped back. one lady had a hard time keeping it in such a posistion (no idea why (G))
so anyone else see this crazy thing? I don't think any of them were the really cheap helmets either.

Last month I bought my GF a bike and the first time she rode she claims she didn't know how to put the helmet on correctly. First she had it on right, then she saw someone wearing it backwards and so put hers on backwards. I finally got her straightened out when she got home, but maybe this is more of a mass confusion than a trend.

you would think that it would have shown up before now then. this is the first I have seen them on backwards.

Well duh, in case of an accident, you don't want your expensive helmet getting scratched. Maybe it's the latest trend following the backwards and sideways baseball caps? Did you notice if the price tag was still attached to the helmets? :D

god I can just se the price tag permently attached for a fashion statment. next thing you know baggy tights.
next thing you know baggy tights.
Well, if you're overweight and riding a ton, that might actually be a good thing :P
My three-year-old wears it that way if I let him put it on himself.
I've been seeing it a lot lately. Mostly goofy families riding Huffys

Hmm, goofy eh? What do non- goofy families look like to the bicycling correctness crowd? Would they look like Bicycling Magazine fashion plates decked out in Spandex bibs, gaily colored $80 jerseys and Medusa-look hats on ridiculously overpriced high tech machines?
They tip it up that way so they can show off their she-mullet.
Actually, it's quite comfortable. Getting the straps adjusted is another story..... and I'm not goofy. :p

What are you talking about steve. This is already popular fashion.
How the hell do you put a helmet on backwards?
I just tried it and it works fine.
I'm going to wear my helmet that way from this day forward.

Heh, I know what I'd consider goofy (and dangerous):
1) Everyone's seat is WAY too low
2) No-one is signalling turns
3) Only the kids are wearing helmets...or if everyone is wearing them none are adjusted properly
4) The kids are riding in zig-zags
5) They are either on the sidewalk, or on the wrong side of the road
6) Everyone is riding with that wobbly front wheel beginner look
7) oh, and the parents have 3-inch thick "GEL" seats
I'm glad they're out riding but in all fairness they only look goofy to US. But you'll never see anyone throwing stuff at them from cars, or screaming obceneties at THEM will you?

Haha! Don't forget:
8) Everyone is riding in granny gears pedaling at 6x the cadence they should be.

Jeez keep your knickers on. My basic cycling attire is spandex pants, and a t shirt. $29 dollar helmet from target and toe clips.

Yeah. Thats pretty goofy. Especially the dumb-founded, yet content expressions on their faces
Pretty much spot on. Although I can deal with kids zig-zagging, they are just kids after all.
And the fine line between comedy and tragedy: The poor day laborer riding his daughter's pink kiddie-bike with all the frills to a job site. (My feelings toward illegal immigration aside, I felt so sorry for this one guy who I used to see every day riding a pink kiddie-bike, that I gave him an old 12 speed that was just hanging in the garage.)

9) "Dad" with his white tennis shoes and mid-calf, black socks.

I almost never see that I see peopel that don't know how to shift gears and pedal slower then they could walk.
You guys know that helmets won't protect you if you wear them that way right?
I just experimentally tried putting my helmet on backwards. It made me look like Ralph Kramden of The Honeymooners wearing his little busdriver cap.
Not a great look.
Besides, I doubt those helmet makers said, "Hey, let's spend another million bucks on research to make our helmets safe if you put 'em on backwards".

Thank You Mr. Style Man for your view of goofy. Now, WHOM do you think comprises "US"? Why do you think "US" share your smug opinions about bicycling incorrectness?
its not just girls on bicycles

Uh oh, looks like I have to toss out the mobile memory foam recliner chair, and it was so comfy too.
hey wait a minute, my favorite bike is a pink and purple little girls number called 'high fashion'. I just put a hundred miles on it over the last three days. it's not a huffy though, it's a magna.

I sure as hell don't wear my helmet backwards though; I use a full face helmet and additional safety gear.

Sounds like you have some opinions just the opposite of the goofy family comment... but you sound like much more of an *******!
I tried to put mine on backwards and found that the Roc-Loc retention system has a tendency to pull your eyebrows to the back of your skull...now maybe if I tilt it back a little bit....nope... still no good.
I recently noticed a friend wearing a helmet backwards when he stopped at my work on his bike. I asked him what the deal with his backwards helmet was? He had no idea it was on backwards lol. I got him sorted out and he was on his way. He thanked me and said it felt much more comfortable when it was on the correct way.
not an uncommon thing to see

i dunno what this is, but im gonna wear it on my head
i was watching this cnn.com video of some bikers that found a 15ft dead snake on their bike ride and up pops this woman being interviewed. this is in florida, if that helps explain....it cracked me up. true, it might still prevent a huge snake from swallowing you....but only if he can stop laughing. o i shouldn't be so hard on her...maybe it was backwards day in florida or maybe its her anti-helmet statement. i think i will try strapping a catchers mitt on top of my head and see if anyone notices i have it on backwards.

Jeez, that is rich!
Wearing helmets backwards aren't the only problem people have with them

Chinstap is too loose
from http://www.helmets.org/fit.htm
*Your objective: Snug, Level, Stable
You want the helmet to be comfortably touching the head all the way around, level and stable enough to resist even violent shakes or hard blows and stay in place. It should be as low on the head as possible to maximize side coverage, and held level on the head with the strap comfortably snug.
The chin strap should be snug against the chin so that when you open your mouth very wide you feel the helmet pull down a little bit.*
Wouldn't having your chin strap this loose make the helmet as useless as wearing it backward in a collision?
Only time I saw anything resembling that was a young man riding with an extremely loose helmet (and some little kids who's parents weren't watching them or didn't know any better...
I just tried it and it works fine.
I'm going to wear my helmet that way from this day backward.
Fixed :p
For the past several years, my chin-strap was WAY too loose. I could literally push the helmet off the top of my head so it would choke me, and rest on my shoulder blades. I then tightened it up... much better.
And yes, I see the extremes with which gears are chosen... but USUALLY they are mashing along at 4mph
:D This is hilarious. A couple years ago I was walking with some friends along a bike/ped path and this woman goes biking by with a backwards helmet on. I about fell on the path laughing my head off, my friends were baffled and couldn't understand what was so funny since they didn't notice. If she had been stopped I would have said something to her, she didn't really look like a regular cyclist by any means.
