I rode to Castaic Lake, CA today and took The Old Road which is parallel to I-5 in Santa Clarita. One section has a lot of new strip malls and fast-food joints. i.e. cars turning into and out of the many parking lots. Since it's a highway, the speed limit is at least 45 mph or higher. I was going slowly uphill and just passed a lot of the parking lots. There was traffic going downhill at speeds higher than 45. All of a sudden I heard the unmistakable sound of tires screeching, then CRUNCH! It looked like a woman was trying to make left turn out of the parking lot on the other side of the street and wasn't looking so a truck going downhill broadsided her hard. The scary part is the the collision was so great that the truck shot over sideways on the other side of the street - MY SIDE OF THE STREET! This happend less than 50 yards after I passed that spot. The tail end of the truck could have hit me head on or taken off my left leg.
I just don't see any way to avoid situations like this. It looks like a case of a real accident. What would you do? I was going too slow to make any quick lane adjustment or turn; there were parked cars so no place to quickly ditch the bike on the sidewalk.

There isn't, when it's your time to go, it's your time to go.
It's like, you're driving along, all of a sudden someone bumps into you, you slam into the guard rail, which happened to have been installed wrong, the guardrail punctures your car, through the radiator, through the motor, through the steering wheel, and through the drivers seat. What are you gonna do right?

I respectfully disagree with this statement. Many studies show that people who exercise and eat right live longer lifes. Meanwhile, studies show that people who smoke, drink, don’t eat right and don’t exercise do not live as long. If that statement was true, then there should be no coincidence that certain lifestyles promote a longer life and others do not.

My statement was for the situation posed by Mac, in which case I'll have to respectfully disagree with all of those studies based on the fact that many many healthy people die in accidents completely outside of their realm of influence; in those cases, when it's their time to go, it really is their time to go. When a car comes flying across the highway at 60mph head on into you and the only thing between you and the engine block is a foam bucket and 1/16th inch of spandex, I don't care how healthy you are, this is the end my friend.
