View Full Version : IF a mod edits a post then it should say mod edited.

I posted this:
"you're an idiot. those things reflect from a good diistance."
it was edited to this:
"those things reflect from a good diistance."
Now I'm sure it said some where in the TOS that I shouldn't say things about other forum members and that you that BF's has the right to edit with out giving notice to OP or without saying that they edited, BUT when they do edit someones post it is wrong not to say that it was edited by the mod because it was not what I said. The person I called an idiot is most deservant of that title. Morally, it is wrong not to name things according to what truth dictates. It's like being silent about when someone is a racist, a jerk, or just an idiot. However, it is your forums obviously and so you can set whatever rules you want BUT if you edit someones posts it should say that it was not my OP AND that it is was changed by a mod.
Thanks :)

I doen't automatically say a thing. The mod should have sent you a warning and/or and edit not, for attacking someone personally. I know the situation and I will tell you it was changed because you are not allowed to be slanderous towards someone else.
I will speak with the mod in regards to not sending you a pm.

my post didn't quite make sense as pointed out

Main Entry: 2slander
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English sclaundre, slaundre, from Old French esclandre, from Late Latin scandalum stumbling block, offense -- more at SCANDAL
1 : the utterance of false charges or misrepresentations which defame and damage another's reputation
2 : a false and defamatory oral statement about a person -- compare LIBEL
- slan·der·ous /-d(&-)r&s/ adjective
- slan·der·ous·ly adverb
- slan·der·ous·ness noun
What I said about him was not false and not a misrepersentation so it's not slander.

By your interpretation. Calling someone an idiot is being insulting to that person. Period. No argument. Thanks for coming out...

To be honest, I wouldn't normally worry about, but if I receive complaints about the insults being excessive or just plain offensive then I deal with them. This one received a few complaints and was considered unnecessary.

Thanks for cominng out? Out where? ^^
I think the larger issue is that it should say that it was edited or just delete the whole post. You guys set the rules and if I cant call (blank) an idiot then fine. But if your going to change what someone said then the post should say that it was edited. I'm sure you can come up with a quick copy paste standard thread edited by mod stamp. Like in a newspaper... If someone says something in the newspaper that owner of the paper does not want in his paper then he issues a retraction or asks the writer to edit it. But he does not go and edit it himself and especially not with out saying it was edited.
Maelstrom

I already addressed that issue. I am not going to address it again. I don't disagree with THAT point at all and I apologize and will address this privately amongst the mods. There is no need to continue arguing a point you won on the first post.
*EDIT* *MOD EDIT!* *EDIT* *MOD EDIT*
Edited for content, style, and well... it was just plain freakin' wrong to use that word freaking. :D

Oh I didn't realise "The mod should have sent you a warning for not attacking someone personally." meant that you agreed with me on THAT. Thanks for your time.

I suppose rereading it wasn't overly clear, thats what happens when you write code full time, your english skills get abbreviated. But yes I was agreeing :D...

So what? You could see that the post was edited just by reading it, and from reading the forum guidelines when you registered you were, presumably, able to figure out why it had been edited. What's the problem? Here's a suggestion: if you don't want your posts to be edited, how about sticking to discussing the issues in the thread rather than resorting to childish name-calling?

huh? Duh, I found out it was edited but are really so dumb that you think that's the issue? FINE, I can't call people names BUT do you really think that because someone might be able to see and deduce that something they wrote was edited that it's right to edit what someone said with out saying that it was edited? I can go back to the newspaper analogy but I think analogies might not be your strong suit.

Agreeing with Chris here. Many people don't read their warning mail, and continue posting pictures, and "I RULE" content. Others try to retaliate against the mods. What's that about?
We should'nt even need moderators. The topic is bikes not someone's missing panties, bong, or grammar.

huh? Duh, ...
,,,you're an idiot
It's true that the person may be an idiot or even a child. When phrases like this stay in the post, they tend to start flame wars that drag down the quality of the topic and system resources. Sometimes it's easier for the mod to just drop the phrase. Rather than knit pick, if the problem continues, the person will get a PM warning of some sort.

I would have thought such information would have been largely redundant, given that the average four year old could figure it out without needing to be told. If someone can clearly see that a post has been edited, what's the point of sending them an e-mail re-affirming this? On the other hand, perhaps you also need someone to tell you it's wet outside on a rainy day, too.

You know, perhaps you were right, perhaps you should be allowed to call people idiots. Coming from you, most people would probably take it as a compliment.

Wow are you dense... It was by luck that I noticed that it was edited. But what I really care about is that it was edited and it doesn't say mod edited. The issue is not whether I can figure out if something was edited. It is censorship. In this case it doesn't matter much that it was edited. I called (blank) an idiot and now it's gone. Big deal! But What about in the future if did matter. What If what I said was controversial but important to me. If that was edited with out me knowing by a mod, which means it was not my OP, then my msg was censored. It should say edited/censored. Get it yet? This is my last time going around this circle with you, so pls read carefully.
AND just to be petty, huh and duh are english idiot.
Taken from merrium webster:
Main Entry: huh
Pronunciation: a grunt articulated as a syllabic m or n with a voiceless onset, or as the syllable 'h& or 'h&n, often ending in a glottal stop, and uttered with a range of intonations; often read as 'h&
Function: interjection
Etymology: imitative of a grunt
-- used to express surprise, disbelief, or confusion, or as an inquiry inviting affirmative reply
Main Entry: duh
Pronunciation: 'd&, usually with prolonged &
Function: interjection
1 -- used to express actual or feigned ignorance or stupidity
2 -- used derisively to indicate that something just stated is all too obvious or self-evident

You are the only poster I have seen who consistently "pwns" himself. I don't know what gratifies you about acting out in this manner on an online forum, but whatever floats your boat. Besides, it keeps the rest of us entertained.

I don't know what "pwning" myself means but I'll take that as a complement from you- so thanks "perfesser!"

No, it isn't. It is only censorship if you're absolutely prevented from expressing an opinion. Given that nobody has made any attempt to prevent you from finding another forum on which to express that opinion, or, God forbid, actually paying a hosting fee for your own website on which to express that opinion, it isn't censorship. However, as long as you're here by invitation and at someone else's expense, you play by the rules of this forum. Either that, or find another one. Again, you might want to re-think your childish name-calling, unless you want more posts edited, or to have your posting privileges removed -- and to be frank, I couldn't care less if you think it's censorship.
But What about in the future if did matter. What If what I said was controversial but important to me.
Again, nobody is stopping you from setting up your own website and expressing your opinion there if it's so important. The fact that you've not bothered suggests that perhaps it isn't.

diistance (only needs one 'i', not two)
someones (needs an apostrophe between the final 'e' and the final 's' to make it possessive)
misrepersentation (misrepresentation)
cominng (only needs one 'n', not two)
cant (needs an apostrophe betwen the 'n' and the 't' to make it a contraction of can and not)
your (while your is a properly spelled word, in the context of the sentence you wrote, the proper spelling would be you're, which is a contraction of you and are)
complement (again, complement is a properly spelled word, you simply misused it in place of compliment)
That makes 7 misspellings. And I'm not even going to get into your poor grammar skills, other than to say they only add to the impression that you appear to be an unreasonable blowhard who only wants attention.

After re-reading Post #1, I'm beginning to see the underlying problem.
I believe you're afraid that mods could totally take artistic liscense on your posts and change the meaning without anyone realizing that it happened.
ShimanoPower please confirm that this is what you're worried about. It's the honor system, we don't do that. However, I'm now marking more posts to show that I've had to change [probably to the embarassment of the person who wrote it] I don't like embarrasing people or making them look dumb, but I DO see your point.

An example post that I did NOT notify the user was a person from another country who could barely write English.
The reply made fun of the person rather than answering a question. I edited the word that was glaring and PM'd the "helpful" replier. The offending part of the reply said something like [removed by moderator because it was unhelpful]
The topic is Bikes, not how people spell. Everyone viewing that thread knew what that guy was asking. I should not have had to babysit that thread.

Omg someone who understands! I feel like I've been walking through a desert and I found water! Yes this is exactly what I"m trying to argue. I would love to get mod edited stamp at the bottom of a edited post.
Thank You

Nobody asked, but here's what I think. The moderators shouldn't waste their time editing posts at all. If a post contains something that the moderator thinks is offensive or strays too far off topic, they should simply delete the entire post. Tough luck if your 500-word treatise on Campy shift levers goes bye-bye because you also felt like calling someone an idiot. A PM to the poster would be a courtesy at the sole discretion of the moderator.

Maelstrom's solution seems best (marking what changed if appropriate).
TimeStamp would be nice...but wouldn't show HOW the post changed.
Fortunately, with over 30K members... *MOST* people control themselves while posting and percentage wise very few posts actually get edited (at least by me).

Time stamps are a great idea. Other forums I have been visitng have time stamps on ANY post you or a mod edits. It also displays who edited the post. I hate time stamps being put on your post when you have edited them, but just say if a moderator edits a post then a time stamp would be a good idea.
Disagree with the mod 'explaining' how the post was edited, a time stamp with the mods name is a GREAT idea in my opinion, and its better then nothing and informs every member or non-member who reads the post.

I'm a moderator at another forum (which uses a different software than bikeforums). If I edit someone's post, at the bottom of the post is a small note saying "edited by moderator." I'm required by the moderator agreement to add my user name and PM the person with the reason why it was edited. It's not that big of a deal. The same rules apply when I delete a thread or a post: I'm to PM the post author (or original author of the thread), and explain why I deleted it.
Moving a thread is a different matter. The software has an automatic "notifiy original poster" and "notify thread participants" feature. It sends out an email to everyone involved in the thread that the thread has been moved, and gives a link to the new location.

I can speak from experience, if Maelstrom feels the need to edit your post--he will sign it and use a different color with /brackets/
but then you can just click 'edit' and erase the mod comments from the original post anyway (seriously--this works!)
not that I've ever done that :p

Which I don't mind to be honest, as long as you don't put the wording I edited out back ;)...
