General Cycling Discussion - do you let other people ride your bike(s)

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

i hate it when people ask to 'take if for a spin' or something.

When people ask me that, I'll respond with, "Can I test-ride your wife?".
My dad wants to ride my bike but I dont let him. Main reason is because I think he will hurt himself(not because I dont want him to ride my bike). I dont think people are aware that riding a road bike is much more different than riding some mountain bike with big wheels. The handling could get you in trouble.
No one else asked me :) ?

My neighbor kids(mostly Hispanics) are always curious about my bike because other grown ups close to them don't ride skinny tire bikes. I'm glad to let them try. But there is one big problem. Their (most of them) legs are still too short and can hardly reach the pedals, so I and another kid have to hold my bike.

I think he is trying to keep them from sticking a bobblehead Jesus or Virgin Mary to his top tube.

My dad crashed first time he rode my old 10-speed. He made the mistake of using the flat part of the handlebar, and because his hands were so close together, when he stood up to go faster, he lost balance and fell.

The first thing I did when I got home with my new Burley was call my husband out to the front yard and say, "Dude, you have got to try this!" I'm hoping to convince him to get a road bike, too, so we can pull some mileage together.

Of course, I'd let a friend ride my bike. It's just a bike for Pete's sake.
I let my cousin get on, he rode it for like 2 meters then said "God Damn how do you do it with that saddle" I just "You get used to it" :) Other than that Nope. Not many people have asked. I think its intimidating for people when they see clipless pedals. ;)

I do. I have let them do some abusive rides in fact. Why would I stop one of my friends from riding when it is so much fun. 90% of the time they go out and buy something and then I have a ride buddy.
Only one person so far; I let my friend who has a bike stand and all the tools ride my bike. This is only fair for me using his shop. But damn, his bikes are too big for me to ride.

Yes, I do. I'm harder on my bikes than most people that would want to ride them would be anyway, I don't think they're going to break anything.
I think if I invested a large chunk of money in a road bike or something, I might be a little worried about people riding it... a MTB or BMX though, I wouldn't be riding it if it broke that easily... if they scratched the paint I might be a little bummed but that's what those bikes are for :P

I've loaned my bike to friends who were in from out of town. Of course they had to ride at a time when I couldn't. ;)
Random people? No.
Close friends? Maybe.

Depends on the person and the situation.
I've definitely lent bikes to some of my riding buds and never given it another thought. I've even lent my beater bike to another friend of Bill W. whom I'd just met and who needed it to ride 20 miles to pick up his car. No way would I lend one of my good bikes to a neighbor or co-worker who just wanted to try it out or who had a bike ride to go on and didn't want to commit themselves to buying their own bike.

Well, maybe in an emergency, but they can't change any of my adjustments.

They're welcome to try it, but I have Speedplay pedals. That "little, tiny pedal" stops a lot of friends/ family from asking.
I only have allowed friends to ride it. One friend tried and could barely hop on to it, he didnt go 2 feet before he finally decided he had enough. My brother has taken it for a few spins around the block, and I will probably allow him to take it for a few more, but I dont think anyone else will be touching it.

I'd only let someone who had a more expensive bike than mine and who regularly rides to take my bike for a spin. Of course i'll have their bike while they're testing mine.
So far that hasn't come up.
What does their being Hispanic have to do with anything?
Seems to be relevant to me. We tend to be a vertically-challenged people.
Anyway to answer the OP, no, I don't let other people ride my bike. I tell them that I don't think they'll be comfortable on my tiny little rock-hard saddle. That's usually sufficient.
Mostly kiddos who wanna touch. Most adults I know are too damn lazy to 'take a spin"
I let my friends.. Not some random person on the street tho.. I usually give'em the finger cuase mostly it's thugs wantin to jack me.. lol
If it was someone I knew, trusted, and was a good rider, I'd let them ride my bike.
A guy in our club and I have talked about swapping bikes for a club ride. He wants to try my Serotta Ti and I'd like to try his Calfee CF. We use different pedal systems, so it hasn't been convenient.

Sure if it is somebody I know, as long as they are know that they are responsible for any damage incured. If they are cool with that, then so am I.
I let my family try my bike out when I just bought it. And my boyfriend was so kind as to lend his bike to my mother when I was putting together a family bike ride.

I have only let one person to ride my bike (The Geek Mobile Jr.), he is another Super Geek so its ok. Otherwise no, not even the guys at the LBS. With my other bike, I let everyone use them, so I can have a riding parten once in a wile.

nobody but myself rides my bike. The only time i have made an exception is when a friend of my parents getting into cycling wanted to feel a "light weight bike". So i let him ride it for .5 miles

On the other hand, I'll let just about anyone take the MTB for a spin. There's nothing anybody is going to do to harm it that I haven't done already.
Also, the brakes are motorcycle style which usually makes it entertaining for me to watch.

"Why didn't you ask?"

I haven't had anyone ask yet, but I have offfered to let a co-worker to take it out to pick up his lunch one day. He declined...more's the pity. I guess it depends on whom was doing the asking as to if I would let them ride it or not. Also they would need to wear size 46 shoes.

wow your generous. I'd tell them to get there arse back once they get to the end of the driveway :D

My friends and my parents friends have enough integritiy to step up and pay for it. Once I get my second bike someone trashes it I will give them chinese water torture then they pay for it. :D

But my long legs & speedplay pedals put most off. And no one around here as dared to try out my fixie!

No way! Even though my fiance bought me my bike, I had to really dodge the question when he asked me this weekend. I ended up driving him to where he needed to go and picking him up. Here are the reasons:
1. The bike is set up to fit me.
2. I've seen him ride, and doing a U turn across 3 lanes of traffic does not qualify as safe biking.
3. I want my odometer to log every mile that *I* do.
4. I'm really anal retentive. Even though I have a hybrid. I love it though.

It's a bike. I'm not worried about it. SH*t happpens, and lord knows I've dropped a few bikes over the years.
Frankly, if you don't trust them to treat it with respect, and have the class to stand up for the cost of repairing damage they've caused, then you have no business lending it. Otherwise, sure, check it out!

when someone trys your bike, take off the magnet, VOILA! only your miles are shown.
NO!
One time I came home from work to find a note that my neighbor's son borrowed my mtb. It was brand new at the time and I had a fit. (the neighbors didn't know this) I did tell his dad and asked where he went. His dad was pretty upset that the kid didn't even ask first. That never happened again, and we have our bikes locked up. I have crashed and hurt myself to save the bikes. That is the first thing I check, is the bike ok? Ok, now how about me? :D Now I have speedplays on the road bike and will be getting them for the mtb, no one will even ask. ;)

If they really know what they're doing, and I like them I'll let them take it for a "short" ride. Otherwise, I make an excuse not to. I don't want my bike screwed up by someone who thinks it's a toy.
I would lend my friends my MTB...but not my road bike... :D

What does their being Hispanic have to do with anything?
Most likely short legs. I had several good old bikes and wanted to give them to my sister-in-law's family but she said they are all too big for them because of short legs. Yes I know that some one will tell about some kid who happens to be Hispanic and 6 foot 19 inch tall but just on the average what I am talking about.
If you have a bike sized for someone 6ft tall it not going to work for someone 5ft 6in tall.
Same goes for kids wanting to ride my bike I don't have a problem it it fits, might make them interested in biking so why not. I tell them sure if it fits. I do have a 24 inch 10 speed to let folks try who aret 6 ft and 300 lbs.
