Road Bike Racing - Stupid Question....

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I was just wondering, how many gears do the bikes they ride in the Tour have?
Thanks,
Jake

20
Campy has been 10 speed for awhile now and I assume all Shimano riders have rec'd the DA 10 by now so it's 20.
There are a few ultra-steep climbs (Angrilu in Spain) where some guys ride triples but that's the exception.

Is there a rule or something that says how many your bike can have, or do they do what they want(what works for them)?
Don't believe there's a max or minimum number of cogsets. They ride the top line Campy or Shimano depending on who the team has a sponsorship deal with and right now both companies have 10 speed cassettes, probably will be 11 before too long.
I'd guess if somebody with the clout of LA wanted to ride 8 speed they'd go out and get it for him but can't see any reason he'd have ever wanted to do that.

No rule on the number of ratios.
All Continental racers are on 10v Record or Dura-Ace.

Maybe to save weight of some rarely used cogs on a particular stage.

I don't think this will be the case considering that most of these bikes are so close to the accepted minimum weight limit.

Gears, is having Lots.
(this is what they'd tell you in Europe, I just saved you a grand or two in plane fare and where's my thanks?)
