Several of the online sites make distinction between road and mountain bike helmets. Is there really any difference? What?

It's the beefiest...unless you're going full out and using a motorcross helmet. But XC helmets are similar to road ones but like you said, a bit beefier and ment to absorb off-road impact.

mountain helmets cover a little bit more of the medula(base of the head in the back) than roadiesI use a Louis Gearneau Tbone. its a light road helmet that fits good, vents good, looks good,was inexpensive has an addable visor, which I have. the main thing is fit and comfort .the more you spend does not always mean a better fit or helmet. a good mt bike helmet can weigh as little as 290gr or as much as 400gr.my helmet weighs 243 gr but a good fitting 300 gram helmet will "feel" just as not wearing a helmet comfortable. different makers have different fits. go to a shop and try a few brands without worrying about looks, just for fit, then find the best fitting brand , and find the one you like/can afford. LG fits me best followed by Bell. Gyro feels like a batting helmet to me but our heads are all a little different. if a road helmet fits best, get a road helmet. ventilation can be blocked in winter by a headsweat or skull cap, so get the most ventilation you can get.

also the air vents in 'roadie style' helmets are angled different due to the different head positions encountered.
