i hav a chromed bmx bike and i want to give it a spray job cos the chrome is chiped in places and rust pits in hard to get places. wat do u guys recomend, also can i spray over crome or would i hav to get rid of the chrome if so how.
First, learn how to spell. Then, understand that regardless of the prep work you do, no paint is really going to stick well to chrome. You'll have to scuff it up really good to get the primer to stick, and then paint over that. If you've got rust in hard to reach places, you're wasting your time. Any rust that isn't completely removed is going to ruin the paint as well.

First: learn proper punctuation. If you're going to get on someone's case about spelling, learn how to use complete sentences. Then, learn to capitalize the first letter of every sentence, particularly the "L" in learn. The word "first" is not a sentence. If someone has trouble spelling, that isn't something they can help. Chrome is often misspelled "crome".
It's another thing when someone is too lazy to write out the entire word "you" and use the letter "u". It's only two letters. It's not too hard to do and the energy expended will be well spent, knowing you're not going to get into trouble with others on the board.
In response to you're question, you would probably have to get the bike sandblasted to remove the chrome. My old bike is doing the same thing but at this point it's just not worth it to refinish it.

Thanks for the grammar lesson, dumbass. Apparently I hit the period key rather than the comma when I typed my message. I've fixed it now, but you're still a moron. There is a difference between missing a keystroke and being totally slack. Also, your 4th grade teacher probably told you to capitalize the first word when using quotes.
Sandblasting a chrome bike is probably not the best idea either. Any media that's abrasive enough to remove the chrome finish will probably have an adverse effect on the tubing, much like shot peening would. Ride it as it is, or buy a new frame.

Anyone know if bmx frames are similar at all to dirt bike frames? Because they can be sand blasted no problem..Idk just putting that out there.
All I'm saying is, if someone doesn't want to type correctly, they don't have to. I don't personally like the "u" and "cos" and all that but if someone wants to write like that I don't give a ****. I was being sarcastic when I was correcting your grammer. Where I come from you get your ass kicked for giving someone **** about the way they talk. God damn grammer Nazis.
Also, unless you're frame is aluminum, sandblasting isn't going to damage it.
Are you going to give Lithium crap about using the abreviation "IDK"?

I don't know about that, but your misspelling of "abbreviation" and the blatant misuse of "you're" as opposed to "your" tells me that all is not right in Casa de F*cktard.

Actually, if you read the terms and conditions that you agreed to when you signed up, you would have seen that we're all required to do our best when it comes to spelling and grammar. I also wasn't giving someone a hard time about the way the talk, but the way they spell/type. This isn't AOL or MSN chat, so unless they have some kind of disability, there's really no reason to they can't take the time to spell things out properly. Maybe I flew off the handle on you, and I'll apologize for that.
Cheers.

its like tiny ball bearings fired at the metal at really high speeds
That's "Shot blasting", which will affect the hardness of the tubing.

better yet just paint over the bike and in two weeks paint it agian if its not lookin all pretty anymore......
Yeah, because painting over rusty chrome is intelligent. And he should use what kind of paint, watercolors?
I'd call a powder coating place and ask them before you make a final decision. It may cost a few bucks, if they can even do it. But the results will be alot better than any spray job. And they will remove ALL the rust for you. How much do you love 'that' frame. Perhaps a new frame would be easier, and a whole lot quicker.

First, sand down the frame with sandpaper (making sure to get all the paint off). Second, sandblast all rust with a sandblaster (or find a friend with a über strong powerblaster, 3000psi should do it :D).
Third, use primer all over the frame so that the paint will stick.
Fourth, spray on the colour and wait for it to dry. (car "touch up" paints seem to have a wide selection of colours, from cars, and come in a large can so you will only need 2 cans for best results)
Finally, spray on clearcoat to prevent water damage and scratches.
Long process but it should work if you don't want to buy a new frame.
EDIT: Oh, and stop being so damn picky about spelling, someone was banned in the MTB section a few months back for spelling badly. Don't go there if you want to stay on bikeforums (and you can't spell for s***).

It's chrome. Do you think he's going to sand through all the layers?

whats shock blasting?
another form/ name for Bead blasting and Sand Blasting (which is basically using an air compressor type thing that shoots little tiny glass beads or sand beads at your bike and gives it texture for paint.
as for how to get the original paint off...aircraft grade paintstripper
and dont use spray paint, it chips off and wears off...get automotive paint....more $$ but better quality

i'f you've been to woodward you'd know by now that the proper way to spraypaint your bike is to first buy as many different colors as possible, then without taking any parts off blindfold yourself and go at it, spray everything a different color and then do it again, don't even worry how it looks because the crappier the paint job the cooler it looks
Taylor, you haven't actually read through this, have you?

would shot blasting get rid of chrome cos my mates dad can get it shot blasted for free and sum other mate can get it sprayed with automotive paint really cheap
Shot blasting may not do it. It may actually just make the chrome harder. I could be wrong, but I think some kind of sand is your best bet. If he can shot blast, he should be able to sand blast as well. It's just different media in the hopper. Go ask him.

Im assuming it's that cheesy spray on kind.

from the sound of shot blasting, it sounds to me like your frame is going to look like it was hit by meteors (little ball bearings??) sand blast if anything
Shot blasting can affect the surface strength of the tubing. It generally hardens the surface, which isn't necessarily a good thing in this case.

The words "Caustic" and "Toxic" lead me to believe that's more than this kid should be doing.
