Road Cycling - Chewy, gooey, yuckie bugs

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

My nose gets stuffy at the drop of a hat, so I normally ride breathing thru my mouth. Problem: bugs getting sucked it when I'm doing 20+. :( Anybody care to share their experiences? Bugs hitting eyewear counts, too.

When I am riding behind someone here on the Burk Gillam trail (lotss of fruit flies like to hang around the blackberries) I watch the riders in front of me if I see them shacking there heads or some usch motions I tuck my head down and close my mouth :D

I have thought of keeping some catsup around so they taste better. :D
Almost got a bruise on my head the other day, it hit so hard. Must have been a "B-52" bug!
I also love it when they get in my eye, or down my shirt between the old gazongas..ewww.
Always keep your mouth closed on a recumbent. I may get bug juice on my teeth....I've never inhaled a bug....... ;)

There are a couple of stretches around here next to horse stables, and large obstacles courses (or whatever the heck you call them) and other riding parks. In those areas I keep my mouth shut, and just get bruised from whacking into the humongous horse flies.

has anyone here ever gotten a bug down their windpipe? that must be a terrible feeling... i wonder if it just gets stuck down there in the lung and just dissolves in there.

I had a bee get in behind my glasses the other day and sting me just inside the eye socket. Ouch. I just about wiped out trying to get the darn thing out of there without breaking my glasses by ripping them off.

I did have the pleasure of choking on a huge fly once, cycling uphill really breathing hard I sucked a enormous fly straight down.
It was on a quiet stretch of road with no houses, It was stuck well and truly in my throat and I ended up on my knees hoping that I wouldn't pass out from lack of oxygen and thinking that my time had come (no joke).
If you know what's it's like when you choke really bad and you can just about take a miniscule breathe, that's what it was like.
What happened to the fly, I don't know ? it didn't come back up but at the same time I cannot remember swallowing it, but believe me that experience really did scare me.
And yes I did turn around and go home (it's an experience that did shake me up pretty bad)
A big wasp floated right near my eye yesterday but didn't sting me. Phew!
Once, one of those flying ants flew down my throat and I began choking and coughing and it came back up. I think it was still alive!

I haven't eaten one lately but I have had a few bees in my helmet in the last two weeks--it must be the bigger vents.
When eating bugs on the road, however, I much prefer the Japanese beetles for sheer bitterness/crunch/yuck-factor. :D
