TheDTrain, not to be weird, but I sincerely hope you get further and further away from the likes of Lynch as you get older. I'm nineteen, and I can't believe I ever liked that nonsense — and I mean that literaly.
Having said that, my most favorite film to date is "Cinema Paradiso" by Guiseppe Tornatore. Federico Fellini I like too, I didn't like "La Strada", but I liked "La Dolce Vita" and loved "8 1/2".
The only Kubrick film I can honestly say I like is "Paths of Glory."
But keep "A Clockwork Orange" and "Dr. Strangelove" away from me.
Well, I don't mean to turn this into a philosophical discussion about art, so I won't go into why I feel the way I do about these films. But I suggest you read Ayn Rand's "The Romantic Manifesto" for a clue. —
Well, I only like some Lynch like Mulholland Dr and Lost Highway, I'm starting to dislike Blue Velvet, but I'm looking forward to his new one, Inland Empire.
Fellini is great, 8 1/2 is my 3rd favorite film of all time, 1st is 2001: A Space Odyssey, 2nd is Godard's Band of Outsiders.
I devour Kubrick. Paths of Glory, Strangelove, Clockwork Orange, The Shining, loved them all.
2001: A Space Odyssey in my opinion is absolute perfection and genius.
Never heard of Tornatore though.
I try to see all kinds of international cinema: american, italian, french, spanish, japanese, and chinese.
I really like Wong Kar Wai now. My dad knows a lot of people in chinatown, including an owner of a video store, so I get free WKW bootlegs!

DTrain, you need to checkout Chungking Express
it's not overrated (I was sure it was, as a "cult film"--fortunately I was wrong)

Darn, I haven't seen 2001—OK, I have, but I didn't pay enough attention. :o I agree that 8 1/2 is way way way up there. I think some people put it down just because so many other people agree it's unbelievably awesome and hands down one of the best films ever made, ever.
Unfortunately, I spend all my $$$ on bicycle parts and music, not enough on movies. I just watch a lot of TCM. BTW, you guys should tune in Fridays at 1 am (central) for their weekly foreign film. Yesterday it was a French film, I didn't catch the title. I've been wanting to watch the Antonioni trilogy (l'aaventura, la notte, l'eclise) but I get a feeling I'm not gonna like it. I've seen Blow Up, though I need to watch it again. I've read that with Antonioni it's a matter of watching it a few times to appreciate it.
Also, I watched Ingmar Bergman's "Autumn Sonata" a few months ago. Dark stuff, it really made me look at Ingrid Bergman in a totally different light. Still, I think hers is the all-time most beautiful smile I have EVER seen! I love the scene in which she plays that Chopin prelude, that piece is truly haunting.

yeah, I used to own Blow Up--before "The Ziggurat VHS Purge of 2003"
I still don't know what I think of Antionioni, beautiful films, but aside from that I'm not a huge fan
I've only seen two or three though, so take that with a grain of salt

Bottle Rocket, The Royal Tenenbaums (Anderson)
Jacob's Ladder (Lyne) [One of the most important yet underrated Horror/Thriller films of all time]
Malcolm X (Lee)
Life is Beautiful (Benigni)
Star Wars IV - VI (Lucas)
The Pianist, Rosemary's Baby (Polanski)
Forrest Gump (Zemeckis)
Das Boot (Petersen)
The Three Amigos (Lendris)
American Beauty (Mendes)
The Baxter (Showalter)
Cool Hand Luke (Rosenberg)
Amélie (Jeunet)
Double Indemnity (Wilder)
Most films by Lucio Fulci

Zig, I can't find that in the guy's store, I've only seen 2046, fallen angels, in the mood of love, and his section from eros. Surprisingly, WKW doesn't seem to be that popular in Chinese culture. The guy had to search way in back just to find a copy of in the mood of love, all bootlegs of course. Which is totally illegal but no one cares.
I don't think they have Chungking express, though my dad did bring home a bootleg Mr. and Mrs. Smith, a week after it got out in theaters, lol. I guess I like WKW cuz I actually understand parts of it without reading all the subtitles carefully. I could just watched dubbed versions, but foreign films are so much cooler. :D
Everyone else, you all seem to be very knowledgable of film, so please make sure you visit my Fav Directors Survey thread and give your top 10.

I think I have the UK R2 version of Chungking Express. If I remember correctly, DVD Beaver rated that one the best. I think I have most of his major work including Days of Being Wild, although I still lack 2046.
