I'm getting into cycling, but I have always loved film and directing. I've even directed a short film, I'll get it on here soon if you want to see it.
My friends say I have a weird taste for movies and directors. Most of the stuff I like is old, weird, and not mainstream at all. I love foreign movies and I love surrealism. Here's a list of some of my fav directors.
Stanley Kubrick - best of the best, if you never heard of him, shame on you(2001, clockwork orange, shining, dr strangelove)
Jean Luc Godard - french master of new wave(breathless, band of outsiders, alphaville)
Ingmar Bergman - swedish master of human psychology (wild strawberries, persona, fanny n alexander)
Adrei Tarkovsky - russian (solaris, andre rubalev)
Federico Fellini - italian maestro, blend of surreal and vibrant (8 1/2, la dolce vita, amarcord)
Quentin Taratino - pulp fiction was so great
Lars von Trier - insanely irritating, but fascinating guy (dogville, dancer in the dark)
David Lynch - modern surrealism at it's best (blue velvet, twins peak, mulholland drive)
Alejandro Jodorowsky - midnight madness innovator, surrealism so uncomprehensible, it's so outrageous it caused riots when it was first released in the sixties (el topo, holy mountain, santa sangre) dvds NOT available in US, you can buy dvdr LEGALLY though at superhappyfun.com , read FAQ, it's legal! You got to see his work!
Now, my top ten fav movies list.
1. 2001: a space odyssey
2. 8 1/2
3. A Clockwork Orange
4. El Topo
5. La Dolce Vita
6. Breathless
7. Pulp Fiction
8. Dancer in the Dark
9. The Shining
10. Solaris
Now I know a lot of you dont know what the hell i'm talking about, but some of you who do, let's chat about REAL movies and directors.

georgiaboy, I really liked Mulholland Drive too. However, not big fan of Hitch, no offense. I haven't seen Pi or Requiem for a dream, but I want to. How good is it? You said you liked about every movie on my list. What kind of directors you like? I devour everything Kubrick, Fellini, Godard, n Jodorowsky. You ever seen El Topo?
michigander, Seven Samurai was pretty good too, but never seen any of those other movies.
I'm only 16 so all my friends say I have a weird taste, but I think I have a good taste. I actually tried my hand at directing a short film with my cousin this summer. I'll find a way to get it online so you guys can see it.

Aronofsky is a pioneer in using video techniques and sound as expression in movies. He is relatively young. You should definitely check him out because like all other great directors he though of new ways to use the camera and microphone along with editing and mixing. Aronofky uses different types of cameras and film speeds. Both of his movies are hard edge realistic movies that emulate life so much it is hard for some to take.
I have seen all of Kubrick's movies. I have 8 1/2 and La Dolce Vita by Fellini. I have never seen a Judorowsky film unfortunately.
You are definitely way ahead of your time for being 16. Get used to alot of your peers not understanding your tastes in movies. If you enroll in art school one day maybe you will meet others with similar tastes. And few along the way like me. But I am still quite abit older than you.
Wow, a 16 year old who can sit through Solaris? I'm impressed.

I am really, really into film. I am particularly into contemporary Asian cinema, so I'll pretty much automatically see anything involving Wong Kar Wai, Chris Doyle, SABU, Kazuto Sato, or the like. I also tend to seek out stuff involving Chris Cunningham, Spike Jonze, Lance Acord, and Michele Gondry. Also Bertolucci and Kurosawa.
Some of my favorites currently include:
Last Life in the Universe
Monday
Hero
ChungKing Express
Away With Words
Drive
Lost in Translation
I occasionally find myself in strong disagreement with some of my friends about film, though. These are people who are equally into film and who have very good taste in these things. To that end, unlike a lot of my friends, I think Tarantino's films are utter crap, I thought both Punch Drunk Love and Eternal Sunshine were poorly written, etc. I'm not trying to start a fight over these, though - I fully expect most people to disagree with me here. I've just always found this difference of opinion to be interesting, if somewhat enigmatic.
I'm also really into high-end animation (ie Ghost in the Shell), but that's a different thread altogether...

Too bad you're not in this area, I could put in touch with some like minded similar aged friends who have a full digital video set up. All the editing equipment, home made dolly systems, lighting. They are students of mine and they have really impressed me with their motivation and innovation.
You have a good list of films. Just keep watching as many films as you can and start writing and making all you can.
A good resource that you might want to look into is the book : Spike, Mike, Slackers and Dikes. (I think that's the right word order, I don't have it sitting in front of me.) It's an interesting history of some of the pioneers of the Indy Film boom. One thing that can be really valuable in it is an index of films shot by independent studios. It will give you a wealth of research material, some good, some bad, some really good, some really bad. You can find a lot of them on something like NetFlix and see some films that most people have never heard of.

I love a good movie...
...and anything that makes my guests go WOW when watching on my 92" screen. See First Photo.
I'm waiting for Batman Begins and War of the Worlds to hit DVD. I'm sure there are some others I should be getting too but I've been distracted with our summer vacation. We just picked up Million Dollar Baby yesterday to be "shown" this Saturday.
The whole movie room was an accident. Moved into the house with the red carpet in place and number 4 on our list of things to update. While working on numbers 1-3 that carpet kept saying "Hey, I remind you of something." It finally hit me...movie theater carpet. I just couldn't replace it then. I'm pretty happy with what I put together over the next two weekends. Since I'm a big fan of recorded music (cds), I already had the sound system needed. I came up with all the rest after a couple of hours at the drawing table... room layout, paint scheme and picked the furniture. The concessions stand was the last thing to be added. See Second Photo.
I've just started buying DVDs in the last six months but need to find some gems from the past.
In my case, Solaris won't be one of them. :)

Nice HomeTheatre, Miles2go. Mine is similar, 92 in. diag. with a Sanyo Z3. It's the only way to watch a movie!!! We just watched Million Dollar Baby and all I can say is WOW. Caught me off guard.
My most watched dvd's are: Fifth Element, Pirates of the Caribbean and Kill Bill. Thought 'Hero' was a visual masterpiece and 'Amelie' totally engrossing.
I don't have a favorite genre or director, just give me a movie that's fun, different, or thought provoking.

von trier is best
his current films are sucking because he is purposely being a pain in the arse, but Zentropa and Breaking the Waves are some of my favorites
who is more annoying, godard or von Trier--that would be an interesting poll. Godard gets my vote, when I was a few years older than you DTrain (19-20) I was very into the french new wave films of godard, truffaut, etc--even the Italian Neo-realist films as well as Luis Bunuel, etc. I think those films make for a great foundation, but I don't think they're great films in themselves--they just broke new ground as far as redefining what could be shot on celluloid and called a film--godard was very interesting
Don't leave out american directors like PT Anderson and Wes Anderson (no relation)--and Ted Demme was a huge loss :( he would've made some incredible films
I am now moving into westerns as well as houston, hawks, etc--the great american filmmakers of the golden era that influenced godard and the rest at cahiers du cinema
Kubrick is another favorite, but he has left quite a catalog behind--I even liked Eyes Wide Shut (though I'd feel better if he had cut EVERYTHING before he died).
Neil LaBute is a good writer, hopefully he will be able to make some better films. His stuff has been okay, but he isn't as good a director as he is a writer.
I have Contempt (godard) on criterion collection, and I think (lol, I can't remember!) I have Band of Outsiders on criterion. BofO is my favorite godard film, the dance scene in the coffee shop is fantastic--
TheDTrain
08-26-05, 09:59 AM
Band of Outsiders is awesome. My favorite scene was the 50 seconds or so of silence.
I like von Trier's recent stuff like Dogville and Dancer in the Dark. Haven't seen idiots or zentropa yet cuz I can't find it anywhere!
von Trier is defintely more annoying than Godard in a good way. Godard was innovative and fun. von Trier movies exist solely to piss people off. LOL.
I haven't seen any new Godard. I want to see Notre Musique.

It's always interesting to me to see people's favourite films lists. Invariably, there is a mix of films I also believe to be great, and stuff that I describe most charitably as "serviceable." I see that we're all taking something different away from each, which is cool.
A few of my notables:
The Shawshank Redemption
True Romance
Full Metal Jacket
Blade Runner
Forbidden Planet
Manhunter

Idioterne is okay, but it's almost like camcorder-style production values
stoffer and the "Idiots" run around and "spazz" (freak out) at public places
I'll probably watch the contempt dvd one of these days, with the criterion supplements
I also have the BRD Trilogy of Rainer Werner Fassbinder to watch

From the look of your avatar, it would seem you're a 2001: A Space Odyssey fan. Which means a Kubrick fans. Yay!
Kubrick was a genius. With that said, you couldn't pay me enough to sit through "Eyes Wide Shut" a second time.
I enjoy most movies, funny, thought provoking and something so unusal it takes me days to figure out what I just saw.
There has been a special on the Encore channels called "The midnight movies".
El Topo was mentioned but I missed any of the clips. I'll probably never watch "Pink Flamingos"
even though I love Waters. More people than not, throw up at this movie. I don't think I can handle watching Divine eat *true* poodle shiet
"Four Rooms was fab, The Misbehavers has to be my favorite story out of the four.
I can't help liking Tarantino, Reserviour Dogs, Pulp Fiction, haven't seen the Kill Bill volumes yet.
I was pleasantly suprised with Fight Club, I didn't even want to see it, but wow, I'm glad I did.
I have to say Comedys are my favorite, and you can't talk about comedies without mentioning Mel Brooks.
I'm not critical or analytical of movies, If I enjoy it, thats all that matters.

I once worked with a guy who won international awards for some satanic slasher catholic girl horror film he made - think Argento on a Really really BAD Day - his follow up film got delayed when he got fired and he was going blind at the time and I think his girlfriend was dying (no I am not kidding). And one other well known non-war, non comedy,

TheDTrain, not to be weird, but I sincerely hope you get further and further away from the likes of Lynch as you get older. I'm nineteen, and I can't believe I ever liked that nonsense — and I mean that literaly.
Having said that, my most favorite film to date is "Cinema Paradiso" by Guiseppe Tornatore. Federico Fellini I like too, I didn't like "La Strada", but I liked "La Dolce Vita" and loved "8 1/2".
The only Kubrick film I can honestly say I like is "Paths of Glory."
But keep "A Clockwork Orange" and "Dr. Strangelove" away from me.
Well, I don't mean to turn this into a philosophical discussion about art, so I won't go into why I feel the way I do about these films. But I suggest you read Ayn Rand's "The Romantic Manifesto" for a clue. —
