General Cycling Discussion - Is there a cycling term for this....

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. For example: You just finished a ride and notice that the odometer is at 49.5 miles and you ride around the block a couple times to get it to 50 miles.

Is there a cycling term that I am not familure with that describes this?

Thanks

Herebouts we call it "milehogging."

I don't know what it is called, but I am guilty.

Obsession?

What's really bad is when you do 10 or 20 miles worth. Around and around.:D

So just round up....49.8 becomes 50 and then 50 rounds up to a 100. What an easy century. I'll try that next time.

My last 5 rides ended .94, .12, .97, .68, .86. Yeah, I could have gone around the block and got those that were close to turning over another mile to do so, but I didn't bother. I'm not that anal.

Atleast you didn't put your bike up on the repair stand and sit there and spin the wheel.

Not that I'v ever done that...

Its possible to do a century by just riding around the block over and over again. Its a real century too, if you actually did ride it.

In portland they have a 'zoobomb' where people take the train to the zoo (which is on a big hill), then ride down it on the tiniest bikes they can find, as fast as possible.

Apparently there has been discussion of doing a zoobomb century, where they keep doing the route over and over again until they hit 100 miles. It would take forever, but would be a real century.

Does it really matter? I personally do not care about exact milage anymore, just abouts, about 60 miles, etc (so 63 could be 60 or 57 could be 60).

i used to do it all the time. an even number at the very least, but i'd always perfer it to be a number with a zero at the end. like 50 miles. now, i ride a little differently - focusing more on time rather than distance. so, i don't do it as often.

I just consider it part of my recovery ride. I ride up and down the street or around a parking lot waiting for my heart rate to decrease.

Yep, I'm guilty sometimes too, but it's a little recovery as well. Also, I put 17 miles on in front of my house getting used to my first set of clipless pedals. I have 2 small hills to go back, and forth on, in about a half mile. It was good practice, and doing the small hills added to the excercise part.

I finished up a ride last night and when I got the bike in the house, my computer read 22.9 miles. I remembered this thread and laughed like an idiot.

Perhaps "least significant bit-ter" for a name?

Where is Rich Hall and his Sniglets when you need them?

Usually don't care about rounding up. Today however was almost home and when I checked the distance it was at 91km and decided to keep riding to make it over 100km.

Question about this . . . Since they use tiny bikes, I assume that they are not really fit for riding, meaning that they get back up the hill some other way (walking, train or whatever). Does the return trip count towards the 100 mi? Or just the time spent on the bike? How long is this hill? If it's like 1/4 mi, I'd hate to do a centry's worth of zoobombing.

I'm not only guilty of this, a couple of weeks ago when I finished my planned ride and realized it was 80 k, so I decided to do another 20, just to "round up".

I would call this technique "cooking the cateye" "squaring the corners" or "bridging the mile".

You can also call it damn lazy if you don't feel like remembering small numbers when filling in your log. This is one kinda lazy that's good for you?

My favorite sniglet is "prndl" -- the thing that tells you what gear your automatic transmission car is in.

Anyway, I'm totally guilty of this. And I've done a different but just as obsessive thing: One morning after a really hard ride I rolled into the driveway and my computer read "Avg. 20.0mph." So when I put it in the garage, I lifted the front wheel up so it wouldn't spin, activate the computer and drop it down to 19.9.

(I think I may need to refill that Paxil prescription....)

I'm guilty. Also, after noticing that many of my rides ended with x.9 average speed, I will near hurt myself riding home to stay over y.0 . My ride home is a time killer in that it entails a few miles through town and a couple of hills. And I can't bring myself to lie to my ride log. 49.97 won't become 50. When I got a cycle computer, my buddy said
" You'll be a slave to that thing." I try to tell myself that he was wrong.

No. I log it accurately as 49.5.

However, when asked, I tell people that I did 50. Actually, I think I'd round 47 up to 50
